Paramount Orders ‘Dexter: Origins’ Series, Whilst Also Eyeing Other Spin-Offs
Paramount is looking at expanding ‘Dexter’ in a big way, as they officially ordered a prequel series, ‘Dexter: Origins‘, whilst also considering a number of other spin-off series based around everyone’s favourite serial killer.
But firstly, the prequel series. This will be set at the outset of Dexter’s transition into the avenging serial killer he would become. It’ll be set in Miami, and begins as Dexter graduates college to join Miami Metro, where he meets younger versions of many of the characters we came to know in the original show. The show will also focus on Dexter’s family, including a very-much-alive Harry and a very formidable, teenage Deb.
Clyde Phillips, the longtime showrunner of the original series, is the person behind this new iteration. “I couldn’t be more excited about exploring and expanding the universe of Dexter,” said Phillips. “It’s a privilege to contemplate going even deeper with these complex and iconic characters — and the stories, themes and possibilities they inspire.”
However, that is not the only ‘Dexter’ related series they have development (although it is the only one currently ordered to series.) Paramount is also looking at a second season of ‘Dexter: New Blood’ which would focus on Dex’s son, Harrison, as he follows in his father’s bloody footsteps. On top of that, they are looking at other possible series which would tell the back stories of some of the show’s most iconic characters. The first up for consideration is John Lithgow’s Trinity Killer. Clyde Phillips is set to oversee the franchise and any further spin-offs which do get picked up.
All of these shows are being made for Paramount+ in the USA, so would likely air on Paramount+ in the UK as well (that isn’t always the case, but seems likely here.) ‘Dexter’ originally aired on Showtime in the USA, however, Paramount recently announced that the Showtime linear channel in the USA would be folded into the Paramount+ streaming service on that side of the Atlantic. Showtime already is part of Paramount+ in the UK and other international territories.
