by Dave Elliott

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story, the prequel to the hugely popular Netflix drama, has been given a trailer and a May premiere date the streaming service has announced.

Centred on Queen Charlotte’s rise to prominence and power, this Bridgerton-verse prequel tells the story of how the young Queen’s marriage to King George sparked both a great love story and a societal shift, creating the world of the Ton inherited by the characters in Bridgerton.

Sex Education’s India Amarteifio takes the title role as the young Charlotte, with Golda Rosheuvel reprising her ‘Bridgerton’ role. Adjoa Andoh also returns as Lady Agatha Danbury, alongside Ruth Gemmell as Lady Violet Bridgerton, and Hugh Sachs as Brimsley. Corey Mylchreest (‘The Sandman’) plays the young enigmatic George. Arsema Thomas makes her TV debut as a young Agatha Danbury, a friend and confidant of Charlotte.

Other cast includes Michelle Fairley as Princess Augusta, Sam Clemmett as young Brimsley, Freddie Dennis as Reynolds, Richard Cunningham as Lord Bute, Tunji Kasim as Adolphus, Rob Maloney as the Royal Doctor, and Cyril Nri as Lord Danbury.

“I want people to feel like this is what happens with real love. Love is hard. Love is difficult. Love has many layers,” commented Rhimes about the new show. “The idea that the happy ending that we always talk about for characters doesn’t have to be the obvious one.”

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story‘ premieres Thursday, 4th May 2023 on Netflix UK and worldwide.
