Amazon Orders ‘Cruel Intentions’ TV Series Based On Movie

According to recent reports, Amazon has given a series order to a Cruel Intentions series, based on the 1999 film of the same name.

This reboot of the story would be set in Washington, D.C., and follow two ruthless step-siblings who will do anything to stay at the top of the Greek Life hierarchy at their elite college. When a brutal hazing incident threatens the entire Panhellenic system, they’ll do whatever is necessary to preserve their power and reputations… including seducing the daughter of the U.S. vice president.

The original 1999 film, which starred Sarah Michelle Gellar, Ryan Phillippe, Reese Witherspoon and Selma Blair, has become something of a “cult classic” over the years. The premise was largely the same, although the school in question was based in New York rather than Washington D.C. The movie itself is actually an adaptation of the 18th-century novel ‘Dangerous Liaisons’, making this series an adaptation of an adaptation.

There have been various attempts over the years to make something for TV based on ‘Cruel Intentions’. The first came from FOX as a prequel series called ‘Manchester Prep’. They did shoot three episodes, which never made it on air, but were “remixed” into the direct-to-video movie ‘Cruel Intentions 2’ in 2000. The second attempt was a pilot in 2015 for NBC which was a sequel series continuing the film’s storyline, but the network opted not to move forward with it.

This new version of ‘Cruel Intentions’ was originally in development for Amazon Freevee, however, there is some talk now that may move over to Prime Video instead. Phoebe Fisher (‘Euphoria’) and Sara Goodman (the original ‘Gossip Girl’ series), who were also behind Amazon Studios ‘I Know What You Did Last Summer’ series, are set to write and exec produce. Neal H. Moritz, who produced the original film, along with more recent things such as Prime Video’s ‘The Boys’ and the ‘Fast & Furious’ franchise, will also exec produce.

There has been no cast announced yet, however, none of the original movie cast are expected to appear. Production is currently scheduled to begin this June in Toronto, Canada.

The ‘Cruel Intentions‘ series does not yet have a premiere date, but if you want to keep track of this or any other show, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
