‘The Chosen One’: Netflix Sets August Premiere For Series Adapted From Mark Millar’s ‘American Jesus’

Netflix has set an August premiere date for The Chosen One, a series based on the comicbook series ‘American Jesus’ created by writer Mark Millar and artist Peter Gross.

After surviving a freak accident, Jodie, a twelve-year-old boy from Santa Rosalia, Baja California Sur, discovers he’s the returned Jesus Christ. He can turn water into wine, make the crippled walk… he can even raise the dead. How will he deal with his destiny and lead the world through a conflict that’s been thousands of years in the making?

As the Evangelical and the Yaquí leaders in town try to get him to use his powers to save mankind, all Jodie wants to do is impress the girl he likes and stand up to his bullies. As Jodie struggles and eventually comes to terms with his destiny, everything gets thrown for a loop when he realizes he discovers the truth about his identity.

The series star Bobby Luhnow as Jodie, with Dianna Agron as Sarah, Tenoch Huerta as Lemuel, and Carlos Bardem as Father Pastor Cruz.

“What they’ve done with this is just masterful… It looks like Roma or City of God, a six-part series of absolute beauty and I’ve loved every second of this,” said the creator of the comicbook, Mark Millar, adding that the show is “a horror story, but also a coming of age and has a Stand by Me vibe…”

‘The Chosen One’ is produced by Millarworld and Redrum for Netflix. Everardo Gout (‘Kaleidoscope’, ‘Snowpiercer’) is director of the drama, exec producer, and co-showrunner alongside Leopoldo Gout.

The Chosen One‘ premieres Wednesday, 16th August 2023 on Netflix UK and worldwide.
