ITV Renews Drama ‘The Tower’ For Season 3, Ahead Of Season 2 ITV1 UK Premiere

Ahead of the Season 2 UK premiere later this month, ITV1 has ordered a 3rd Season of crime thriller The Tower starring Gemma Whelan, Tahirah Sharif, Jimmy Akingbola and Emmett J Scanlan.

Season three has already begun filming and is titled ‘The Tower 3: Gallowstree Lane’. Based on Kate London’s third novel, it is adapted by screenwriter Patrick Harbinson (Homeland, Fearless, 24) and produced by his company Windhover Films and leading production company, Mammoth Screen. It was commissioned by ITV’s Head of Drama Polly Hill.

The drama will see Gemma Whelan return as DS Sarah Collins, along with Tahirah Sharif, who was BAFTA-nominated for her role as PC Lizzie Adama for the first series, Jimmy Akingbola as DC Steve Bradshaw and Emmett J Scanlan as DI Kieran Shaw.

“We’re delighted to be filming a third series of The Tower. Damien and I are very grateful to Polly Hill and ITV for the early commission,” said writer Patrick Harbinson. “Gallowstree Lane has a high-stakes drugs and gangs storyline with Jimmy and Emmett’s characters taking major roles. Sarah and Lizzie have gripping and heart-breaking stories too, as the drama of Portland Tower comes full circle. I firmly believe series three will be our best yet.”

ITV has not released a synopsis for season three, however, the novel is based around Operation Perseus, a covert police investigation into a powerful criminal network, headed by DI Shaw, who is about to make the arrests of his career. But then the brutal murder of a teenager sends a shockwave through the very organization he has been targeting, threatening not only Shaw’s case, but everyone with a connection to the boy who was killed on Gallowstree Lane…

Mammoth Screen and Windhover Films will produce the four-part drama in association with ITV Studios. Patrick Harbinson will executive produce the series alongside Mammoth Screen’s Damien Timmer and Charlotte Webber. Charles Bates produces and Rene van Pannevis (Looted) directs. Polly Hill will oversee production of the drama for ITV.

‘The Tower’ is distributed internationally by ITV Studios, with season one having sold into over 90 territories. HBO Europe, Canal+, Britbox North America and Australia, Virgin Media Ireland and TVNZ are among the platforms and broadcasters to licence it. On ITV, the first season debuted with 5.4 million viewers.

The Tower 2: Death Message‘ premieres later in August 2023 on ITV1 for the UK with season one available now to stream on ITVX. Both seasons are available on Britbox in the USA.
