Percy Jackson creator Rick Riordan appeared at MCM London Comic Con 2026 alongside author Annabelle Oh for a fascinating discussion about the expanding world of Camp Half-Blood, the future of Disney+’s ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians‘, and some intriguing possibilities for what might come next. We’ve got the panel in two videos, including a discussion about the new Camp Half-Blood books, potential television spin-offs, and a fan Q&A covering everything from Heroes of Olympus to whether Rick might eventually bring Percy’s adventures to an end!
Hosted by Coco Omer, the panel brought together the creator of one of the most beloved modern fantasy franchises and one of the authors helping to expand its universe in some exciting new directions.
The main focus was Camp Half-Blood: The Wild Zone, the first novel in a new four-book series exploring what happens at the famous demigod training camp when Percy Jackson isn’t around.
However, the conversation also ventured into the Disney+ television adaptation, the possibility of additional shows set in Percy’s world, and some fascinating revelations about how the new books came together.
And if you’ve ever wondered whether Rick Riordan has a grand master plan for the entire Percy Jackson universe, well, the fan questions certainly get into that!
We’ve split the panel into two videos, with the main discussion first, followed by the audience Q&A.
Part 1: The Wild Zone, New Demigods & A Potential Camp Half-Blood TV Spin-Off!
The first video begins with Rick Riordan looking back at how Percy Jackson originally came into existence, including the personal inspiration behind the character and how a story created for his son eventually grew into a worldwide publishing phenomenon. It’s a lovely reminder that even the biggest franchises can have surprisingly humble beginnings.
The conversation then turns to Camp Half-Blood: The Wild Zone, which introduces four new demigods, Katie Kim, Benny, Zuri and Harper, and takes readers back to an earlier period in Percy’s adventures.
The new series is set between The Lightning Thief and The Sea of Monsters, offering a chance to revisit familiar characters and locations from a completely different perspective.
Annabelle Oh discusses how she became involved in the project, and how her own Korean heritage helped shape Katie Kim, a daughter of Ares whose challenges aren’t necessarily the ones you’d expect from someone in that particular cabin. It’s an interesting discussion about identity, family expectations and bringing something personal to an already established fictional universe.
There are also some entertaining revelations about how Rick and his four co-authors worked together to build a connected story across multiple books. It turns out that giving several authors the freedom to play around in the Percy Jackson universe can produce some rather unexpected results, including developments that surprised even the writers themselves!
Rick also explains why he wanted to revisit some of the supporting characters from the original novels, including Clarisse La Rue, Charles Beckendorf and the Stoll brothers. For longtime fans, it’s a particularly interesting opportunity to return to a period of Camp Half-Blood history that they already know, but experience it through entirely new eyes.
However, perhaps the most intriguing revelation concerns how the new Camp Half-Blood project originally came about. Rick explains that the idea actually emerged during discussions surrounding the Disney+ television series, and that the concept wasn’t initially limited to books. Could that mean we might eventually see another television series exploring life at Camp Half-Blood?
Rick shares the origins of those discussions and where things currently stand, although it’s important to stress that no television spin-off has been officially commissioned.
Towards the end of the discussion, Coco also asks about Season 3 of ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’, prompting Rick to introduce some exclusive footage shown to the audience at MCM. Unfortunately, we can’t include that footage in our recording, so the first video ends just as Rick introduces it. However, you can see the official trailer below!
Part 2: Heroes Of Olympus, Celtic Mythology & The Future Of Percy Jackson!
The second video begins with a special prerecorded question from Kyle Lukoff, co-author of the upcoming second Camp Half-Blood novel, The Rite of Aphrodite.
Kyle has an interesting question for Rick and Annabelle about creating compelling fictional characters, and their answers offer a lovely insight into what makes a character stand out when they’re developing a new story.
From there, the floor opens to the fans, who have plenty of questions about the Percy Jackson universe and the art of writing. One audience member asks Rick how he manages to maintain the discipline needed to actually sit down and write a book. Considering just how many novels he’s produced over the years, you’d imagine he must have some sort of elaborate system. His answer, however, is rather more straightforward than you might expect!
There are also thoughtful questions about representation and diversity within the Percy Jackson books, including how Rick approaches creating characters whose experiences and backgrounds differ from his own. The discussion touches on his collaborations with other authors, and the importance of ensuring that characters feel like fully realised people rather than simply being defined by one part of their identity.
Another fan asks about the many languages into which the Percy Jackson novels have been translated, leading to a particularly amusing moment when the audience manages to correct Rick on a fact about his own books!
Things then take a slightly darker turn when someone asks how he decides which of his characters will survive their adventures and which might meet an unfortunate end. Given the number of emotional moments he’s inflicted on readers over the years, it’s a question that probably needed asking! Rick’s initial response is very funny, but he also offers a thoughtful explanation of why those moments matter to his storytelling.
There’s also a question about the mythology he would most like to explore next. Having already tackled Greek, Roman, Egyptian and Norse mythology across his various books, you’d think he might be running out of ancient gods and monsters by now. Apparently not! Rick discusses an area of mythology he’s particularly interested in, including some rather extensive academic research he’s already undertaken.
But perhaps the two biggest questions concern the future of Percy Jackson himself.
One fan asks whether Rick intends to keep expanding the world of Camp Half-Blood indefinitely, or whether he can see a point where his own work on Percy’s adventures might come to a conclusion. His response offers a fascinating glimpse into his current writing plans, and what other projects might be competing for his attention.
And, inevitably, there’s the question many fans of the Disney+ series have been asking.
Could Heroes of Olympus eventually become a television series?
With ‘Percy Jackson and the Olympians’ continuing to adapt the original novels, the possibility of moving on to Rick’s popular follow-up series is something fans are understandably excited about. Rick discusses the idea, what he knows about Disney’s approach to the television franchise, and the factors that might influence what happens next.
Again, there isn’t an official Heroes of Olympus television announcement here, but his comments provide some interesting insight into the possibilities for the franchise.
It’s a wonderful Q&A, mixing genuinely useful writing advice with behind-the-scenes insights and some fascinating questions about the future of a fictional universe that has captivated readers for more than two decades.
