BBC Announces ‘Talking Doctor Who’ Documentary With David Tennant Delving Into Classic Series

As part of the Doctor Who 60th Anniversary celebrations, the BBC has announced ‘Talking Doctor Who’, a new documentary which sees David Tennant delve through the history of the show.

In ‘Talking Doctor Who’, Tennant, who played the 10th Doctor and is now back as the 14th Doctor in the upcoming specials, will travel back in time to examine the history of the classic era of the series. It will include archive interviews from past Doctors, all the way back from the late William Hartnell, through to Sylvester McCoy, who played the 7th Doctor. Tennant also shares some of his own insights into playing the role and compares it to the experiences of his predecessors including filming regenerations, choosing costumes, and working with the technology.

November is set to be a big month for ‘Doctor Who’, not only with Tennant returning in the 60th Anniversary Specials, but also with the BBC dropping over 800 hours of “Doctor Who content” onto iPlayer. We still don’t currently know exactly what the content will be, although it will include many episodes of the classic series, as well as the various spin-offs like the ‘Sarah Jane Adventures’, ‘Torchwood’, ‘Class’, and the behind-the-scenes show ‘Doctor Who Confidential’.

Unfortunately, one thing we know won’t be part of the collection is the original first serial of the drama “An Unearthly Child”. This is due to a rights issue with Stef Anthony Coburn, son of writer Anthony Coburn, who is refusing to re-license the four-episode arc to the BBC.

In addition to the episodes coming to iPlayer and the documentary, on the 1st of November, the BBC will simultaneously launch an extensive online archive from the show’s history at bbc.co.uk/doctorwho, with everything from interviews with cast to written documents, long unheard audio, and behind-the-scenes photos. Together, they tell the story of the ground-breaking series through 60 archive gems for the 60th anniversary.

‘Talking Doctor Who’ premieres Wednesday, 1st November 2023 at 7.30pm on BBC Four and iPlayer.

Doctor Who‘ returns to screens in November 2023 with David Tennant starring in the three specials as the Fourteenth Doctor to coincide with the 60th-anniversary which will premiere exclusively on the BBC for the UK and Ireland. Disney+ will air the series internationally. Ncuti Gatwa then takes over in Christmas 2023 as the Fifteenth Doctor.

If you want to keep track of ‘Doctor Who‘ or any other show, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
