UKTV Gold Sets November Premiere Date For ‘Dad’s Army: The Animations’

UKTV Gold has set a November premiere date for ‘Dad’s Army: The Animations’, a project which recreates a set of early lost episodes of the original series with audio from the original cast.

The episodes feature the voices of Arthur Lowe, John LeMesurier, Clive Dunn and John Laurie. Created by the RTS award-winning animation team behind Doctor Who: The Lost Adventures, these new animated episodes give audiences a chance to enjoy five original episodes of the much-loved comedy classic for the first time in over fifty years.

First up is “The Loneliness of the Long Distance Walker”, from Season 2, Episode 3. Private Walker is called up into the army and Captain Mainwaring does all he can to appeal the decision.

This will be followed by “Under Fire” (Series 2, Episode 6), where the platoon arrests a supposed Nazi agent, on charges of signalling to enemy air-craft; “A Stripe For Frazer” (Series 2, Episode 5) in which Private Frazer receives an ill-advised promotion to Lance Corporal; And “The Animated Christmas Special”, which is a combination of two shorts from Christmas Days 1968 and 1970, where Captain Mainwaring drills his platoon in physical fitness and assembles a choir to entertain the troops.

The three full-length episodes were previously remade by Gold back in 2019 as ‘Dad’s Army – The Lost Episodes’, with Kevin McNally (Captain Mainwaring), Robert Bathurst (Sergeant Wilson), Kevin Eldon (Lance Corporal Jones), David Hayman (Private Frazer), Mathew Horne (Private Walker), Timothy West (Private Godfrey) and Tom Rosenthal (Private Pike) taking over the roles.

However, this animated version will feature the original cast, with the audio taken from a 1974 radio recreation of the lost episodes, alongside archive material and newly recorded material based on the original television scripts. The animated “A Stripe For Frazer” has previously aired, but the other episodes are premieres.

‘Dad’s Army: The Animations’ premieres Monday 6th November 2023 at 8pm on UKTV Gold.
