‘Outlander’, ‘For All Mankind’ and ‘Battlestar Galactica’s Ronald D. Moore has found his latest gig as he steps into the live-action ‘God Of War‘ series being developed for Prime Video by Sony TV and Amazon MGM Studios.
A ‘God Of War’ series was first ordered back in December 2022, with Mark Fergus and Hawk Ostby (‘Iron Man’, ‘Children of Men’, ‘The Expanse’) set as writers/exec producers and ‘The Wheel of Time’s Rafe Judkins as writer/EP/showrunner. However, last week the news landed that all three had “left” the project as Amazon wanted to go in a “new creative direction”, despite saying that they also praised the trio’s completed scripts… which seemed a little odd, but it now seems that new creative direction is the legendary Ronald D. Moore.
Moore began his career on ‘ Star Trek’, working on TNG, DS9 and Voyager. He then created the award-winning reboot of ‘Battlestar Galactica’, followed by Starz much-loved time-travel drama ‘Outlander’, and Apple’s brilliant alt-history drama ‘For All Mankind’.
The popular ‘God Of War’ video game first landed in 2005 on PS2 and was based around Greek mythology, and that “first era” ran until 2015. However, it was the 2018 relaunch of the franchise that moved things to a “second era”, set around Norse mythology, when things really hit the stratosphere for the franchise. That saw former Spartan soldier turned God of War, Kratos, trying to live a peaceful life in the realm of Norse Gods and monsters, following his vengeance against the Gods of Olympus years earlier. In this harsh, unforgiving world he must fight to survive… and teach his son to do the same.
We don’t yet know where in the franchise Moore will begin with his iteration. The take by the original creative trio followed the Norse mythology, but it is possible Moore could decide to go back to Greek mythos first and tell that part of the story too.
The series will still be produced by Sony TV and Amazon MGM Studios, with game producers Santa Monica Studio’s creative director Cory Barlog as EP alongside PlayStation Productions’ Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan as well as Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Hermen Hulst and Vertigo’s Roy Lee. Jeff Ketcham (Santa Monica Studio) is a co-executive producer.
