It’s the Geektown TV Bloodbath Special! Episode 460 of Geektown Radio has landed, and it’s a jam-packed hour covering US network carnage, the return of some big-hitting TV shows, the BAFTAs, and Apple’s incredibly expensive but undeniably shiny Vision Pro headset!
Joining me this week is Gray, just back from birthday celebrations and already drowning in TV dramas, documentaries, and the occasional dodgy quiz show. But the real star of the show? That would be the network executives swinging the cancellation axe in the US!
US TV BLOODBATH WEEK: Who Survived… and Who Got Slaughtered?
Yes, it’s that time of year again, which we affectionately (and accurately) dub “Bloodbath Week”, where the US networks slash their lineups ahead of Upfronts. If you’re a fan of American TV, grab a drink and brace yourself.
We go network-by-network, breaking down every renewal, cancellation, and pickup from NBC, CBS, ABC, and FOX, and it’s a wild ride. From the shocking axe of FBI: Most Wanted & International to the demise of Suits: LA, and the return of One Chicago, we look at which US network was the bloodiest this year and who wins the “Fluffiest Network” title.
We even look ahead to new projects like Tom Ellis‘ CIA FBI-spin-off, a possible Baywatch reboot, and the strange but possibly brilliant Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins starring Tracy Morgan and Daniel Radcliffe.
Whether your favourite show was saved or binned, we’ve got all the updates – with stats, ratings analysis, and a healthy dose of opinionated commentary.
What We’ve Been Watching: ‘Poker Face’, ‘YOU’, ‘MobLand’ & More
After surviving the bloodbath, we shift focus to what’s new (and worth watching) in UK and US TV:
-
Poker Face returns with Natasha Lyonne back in detective mode. The first episode features a fantastic turn… well, five fantastic turns… from Cynthia Erivo and gets a big thumbs up from both of us.
-
YOU Season 5 sees Joe head back to New York, with plenty of nods to earlier seasons. Anna Camp joins as a set of twins, which is both weird and wonderful.
-
I, Jack Wright on U&Alibi offers up a solid British whodunnit, complete with family drama, inheritance twists, and some clever documentary-style storytelling.
-
Gray shares his growing affection for MobLand (despite Pierce Brosnan’s accent), and his ongoing obsession with The Studio and the final season of Black Mirror.
-
We also touch on Doctor Who, Race Across the World, The Genius Game (featuring a possibly absent David Tennant), and the emotional highs and lows of Grace and Beyond Paradise.
BAFTA Bumps & Broadcast Blunders
The BAFTA TV Awards also get a look-in, as Gray shares his absolute horror at Danny Dyer taking home Best Supporting Actor (not for Rivals, which was actually good – but for Mr Bigstuff… which was, well, not). On the bright side, Jessica Gunning added to her trophy for Baby Reindeer, and Joe Lycett beat out Ant & Dec for Late Night Lycett, which we both agree is cause for celebration.
Hands-On With Apple Vision Pro: Is It Worth £3.5k?
Dave gives a full breakdown of his test run with the Apple Vision Pro headset, the ultra-premium “spatial computing” device that’s equal parts sci-fi and wallet killer.
From Minority Report-style video watching to controlling things with your eyeballs, it’s undeniably slick – but does it justify the price tag? And how close are we really to replacing our desktops with headsets?
Next Week on TV: What To Watch
We wrap up the show with a quick look at what’s coming up on UK screens, including:
-
Love, Death & Robots Season 4 (Netflix)
-
Murderbot – Apple TV+’s new AI-driven sci-fi from Martha Wells
-
Welcome to Wrexham Season 4 (Disney+)
-
ITV’s new crime drama Code of Silence
-
The Bombing of Pan Am 103 (BBC One)
