‘Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story’ will bring one of America’s most infamous murder cases to Netflix this September, with Ella Beatty (Feud: Capote vs. The Swans, If I Had Legs I’d Kick You) starring as the notorious accused axe murderer.
The fourth instalment of Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s anthology series explores the story of Lizzie Borden, the Massachusetts woman accused of murdering her father and stepmother in 1892.
Netflix says the drama follows the repressed daughter of a wealthy New England family and her rebellious maid as they find themselves trapped inside a house built on humiliation and cruelty. The pair escape into fantasies of sex, power and revenge, before a pair of gruesome and still officially unsolved murders shock the world and transform Lizzie into an enduring American icon.
Beatty was selected to play Lizzie following an extensive casting search, having previously worked with Murphy on ‘Feud: Capote vs. The Swans’. The first images from the season include a rather blood-soaked look at her version of the accused killer, although Netflix is unsurprisingly keeping quiet about exactly whose blood it might be.
“I am so excited for viewers to experience our exploration of Lizzie Borden’s story and the questions that her life animates to this day,” said Ella Beatty. “It has been a dream come true to investigate this complicated person’s psychology and to examine an American crime that feels almost mythic in proportion. This season gives us our first female Monster and delves into female rage and repression which I’ve found to feel strikingly relevant. I cannot wait to share it with the world.”
Joining Beatty in ‘Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story’ are Vicky Krieps (Phantom Thread, Monster: The Ed Gein Story) as the Borden family’s live-in maid Bridget Sullivan, and Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy, Monster: The Ed Gein Story) as Lizzie’s father, Andrew Borden.
Rebecca Hall (Christine, Passing) plays Lizzie’s stepmother, Abby Borden, while Billie Lourd (American Horror Story, The Last Showgirl) stars as Lizzie’s older sister, Emma. Jessica Barden (The End of the F**ing World*, Dune: Prophecy) rounds out the announced cast as actor Nance O’Neil, a friend of Lizzie’s.
The new drama follows previous seasons focusing on Jeffrey Dahmer, Erik and Lyle Menendez, and Ed Gein. The Borden story marks the anthology’s first season built around a female central figure, shifting the focus towards female rage, repression and the creation of a legend which has survived through books, films, television dramas and one particularly memorable schoolyard rhyme.
