DC Studios took over the prime Saturday Hall H slot at San Diego Comic-Con to bring fans their first look at ‘Peacemaker’ Season 2, with James Gunn, John Cena, and the cast dropping a brand-new trailer, plus unveiling a new theme song from rock band Foxy Shazam.
The trailer sees Christopher Smith, aka Peacemaker (John Cena), stepping into a parallel dimension that feels like an upgrade from his own. There, he gets to live out his dream relationship with Jennifer Holland (Black Adam) as Harcourt. But things aren’t so simple. Back in the real world, Frank Grillo (Kingdom) reprises his role as Rick Flag Sr. (previously seen in Gunn’s Superman and in the animated series Creature Commandos) and is determined to close the portal, setting up a dramatic confrontation with Peacemaker. As Leota (Danielle Brooks) reminds Chris in the teaser: “No matter how great the grass is over there, you belong here with us.”
Speaking on the panel, Gunn teased a different side of the vigilante this season:
“I really like TV shows where the characters don’t just return every season and they’re the same exact characters. I want to see growth. I want to see change and sometimes regression. And Peacemaker is a different guy this year. He’s dealing with the demons he uncovered from the first season and trying to deal with them, and the world is not accepting him the way he is. They aren’t accepting him as a hero.”
But Gunn wasn’t done with surprises. Following the panel, he took to the stage at Peacefest, a special Comic-Con music event, to announce that Season 2’s theme song will be ‘Oh Lord’ by Foxy Shazam. “It is a song from my favourite band in the world, that is objectively the greatest rock ’n’ roll band in the world, Foxy Shazam. They’re gonna perform it for you guys — ‘Oh Lord’ — come on guys!” Gunn told the cheering crowd before introducing the Cincinnati-based group for a live performance.
Whilst we don’t have video of the live performance at SDCC, you can watch the official music video below:
Foxy Shazam, who first formed in 2004 and reunited in 2020, brought their trademark high-energy style to the event. Gunn was later spotted enjoying the performance alongside friends and his wife, Jennifer Holland, from a private terrace overlooking the stage.
Season 2 picks up following the events of the explosive first season, which saw Chris save the world from alien butterflies and come to terms with his traumatic past, including the death of his father Auggie (Robert Patrick), who now haunts him in ghostly form. Harcourt gets more action this year (including a bar brawl shown in a new clip), while Holland revealed she even gets to pull off a “Dirty Dancing” lift in the new opening credits sequence.
The new season will also see crossover appearances from Nathan Fillion (The Rookie) as Green Lantern/Guy Gardner, Isabela Merced (Dora and the Lost City of Gold) as Hawkgirl/Kendra Saunders, and Sean Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) as Maxwell Lord, with the trio grilling Peacemaker on behalf of the Justice League (seen in the first teaser trailer).
Returning cast members include Freddie Stroma (Bridgerton), Steve Agee (The Suicide Squad), and Danielle Brooks (Orange Is the New Black), alongside new faces Sol Rodriguez (Star Trek: Picard) and Tim Meadows (The Goldbergs).
James Gunn wrote all eight episodes of Season 2 and directs three, including the premiere. Gunn also serves as executive producer alongside Peter Safran and John Cena, with additional episodes directed by Greg Mottola, Peter Sollett, and Althea Jones.
‘Peacemaker’ Season 2 premieres Friday, 22nd August 2025 on Sky Max in the UK. It premieres Thursday, August 21st at 9PM ET/PT on HBO Max in the USA.
