MGM+ has announced ‘Bosch: Start of Watch’, a brand-new prequel series expanding Michael Connelly’s acclaimed detective universe. The new series will see Cameron Monaghan (Shameless, Gotham) step into the shoes of a young Harry Bosch, with Omari Hardwick (Star Trek: Section 31, Army of the Dead) starring as veteran officer Eli Bridges. Production is set to begin in Los Angeles in 2026.
Set in 1991 Los Angeles, ‘Bosch: Start of Watch’ will explore Harry Bosch’s early years as a rookie cop in a city on the brink, filled with racial tension, gang violence, and internal fractures within the LAPD. Amid routine calls and social unrest, Bosch becomes entangled in a high-profile heist that exposes layers of corruption and moral conflict, shaping him into the relentless detective we know from the later series.
The series comes from Fabel Entertainment and is co-created by Tom Bernardo and Brian Anthony, with Bernardo serving as showrunner. Michael Connelly, Henrik Bastin, Jamie Boscardin Martin, and Jasmine Russ also serve as executive producers, alongside Theresa Snider as co-executive producer for Hieronymus Pictures.
Michael Wright, head of MGM+, said: “We are thrilled to expand the Bosch universe with this compelling origin story that showcases how one of television’s most beloved detectives became the man we know today. With Cameron Monaghan and Omari Hardwick bringing these complex characters to life, and the creative vision of Michael Connelly and our talented executive producers, ‘Bosch: Start of Watch’ promises to deliver the gritty, authentic storytelling that honours the franchise’s legacy while opening an exciting new chapter.”
“I’m deeply grateful to Michael Wright and the team at MGM+ for championing this next chapter in Bosch’s journey with such remarkable care and integrity,” added Michael Connelly. “Being able to see how Harry Bosch became the man we have loved for 10 seasons is a gift to me and his many fans. I can’t wait to dig in with Cameron and the writers to explore this uncharted character territory.”
While ‘Bosch: Start of Watch’ will mark the first Bosch series on MGM+, fans will remember that ‘Bosch’ originally aired on Prime Video, while its sequel ‘Bosch: Legacy’ launched on Freevee before moving back to Prime Video earlier this year. The recently launched spin-off ‘Ballard’, following LAPD detective Renée Ballard, was also renewed for a second season on Prime Video. All three services, Prime Video, Freevee and MGM+, sit under the Amazon MGM Studios umbrella, meaning Bosch fans may once again need to juggle multiple streamers to follow every corner of the franchise.
‘Bosch: Start of Watch’ does not yet have a premiere date but will air on MGM+ in the UK. If you want to keep track of this or any other shows, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date. Visit Never Miss.
