BBC One’s acclaimed murder-mystery drama ‘Shetland’ returns this November for its tenth series, as Calder and Tosh find themselves investigating a haunting new case set against the stark beauty of Scotland’s northern isles. The new season premieres on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in early November, with Ashley Jensen (After Life, Ugly Betty) and Alison O’Donnell (Holby City, Feel Good) once again leading the cast.
This latest mystery sees DI Ruth Calder and DI Alison “Tosh” McIntosh drawn to the remote hamlet of Lunniswick after the chilling discovery of an elderly woman’s body. The victim, retired social worker Eadie Tulloch, has lain undiscovered for several days, and what begins as a simple case soon unravels into a web of secrets, lies, and fractured family loyalties. As Calder and Tosh begin to uncover the hidden connections among the residents, they find that life in this small community hides dark truths that could have devastating personal consequences for the team.
The cast for Series 10 is as impressive as ever, with Maria MacDonell (Outlander) as Eadie, Stuart Townsend (Salem, The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen) as her estranged son Ed Tulloch, Clive Russell (Game of Thrones, The North Water) as Arthur Mair, and Ellie Haddington (Motherland, The Suspect) as his wife Lana. Louise Brealey (Sherlock) joins as their daughter Isobel, with Niall MacGregor (The Rig) as Isobel’s struggling husband Tom, and Lila Rose as their heavily pregnant daughter Jess.
Elsewhere in Lunniswick, Greg McHugh (Fresh Meat) plays the well-meaning Colin Waite, who directs suspicion towards troubled young neighbour David Powell, portrayed by Stephen McMillan (Boiling Point). David’s fiercely protective mother Gina, played by Frances Grey (The Crown), will stop at nothing to keep her son’s secrets hidden.
Familiar faces also return to the team, including Steven Robertson (The Tourist) as Sandy, Lewis Howden (Still Game) as Billy, Anne Kidd (Shetland) as Cora, and Eubha Akilade (Vigil) as PC Lorna Burns. Samuel Anderson (Doctor Who, Another Life) joins the cast as the new Procurator Fiscal, Matt Blake. Other guest stars across the season include Saskia Ashdown, Joanne Thomson, Gabriel Akuwudike, Leigh Biagi, and Adam Rhazali.
Produced by Silverprint Pictures for the BBC, the new season promises the trademark mix of haunting atmosphere, complex emotional storytelling, and breathtaking landscapes that have made ‘Shetland’ one of Britain’s most beloved crime dramas.
‘Shetland’ Season 10 premieres Wednesday, 5th November 2025 at 9pm on BBC One and BBC iPlayer.
