After ten years, eight seasons, and countless journeys through time, ‘Outlander’ is preparing to say farewell. MGM+ UK has confirmed that the acclaimed historical drama will return for its eighth and final season in March 2026, bringing to a close one of television’s most enduring love stories.
Adapted from Diana Gabaldon’s bestselling novels, ‘Outlander’ first arrived on screens in 2014 and quickly became a phenomenon, blending sweeping romance, historical drama, and a touch of sci-fi into something entirely unique. Over the years, it’s followed the extraordinary love story of Claire (Caitríona Balfe (Belfast, Ford v Ferrari)) and Jamie Fraser (Sam Heughan (Men in Kilts, Bloodshot)), a couple torn across centuries by time travel, war, and fate.
The upcoming final season promises to deliver everything fans have come to expect from the show: passion, heartbreak, danger, and the kind of emotional storytelling that made ‘Outlander’ one of the most beloved series of the past decade.
According to MGM+, “a heart-wrenching journey lies ahead for Claire and Jamie’s enduring love story.” As the new season begins, the Frasers have returned home to Fraser’s Ridge after resigning Jamie’s commission in the Continental Army. But peace proves short-lived, as the turmoil of the American Revolution follows them back to the North Carolina frontier. The Ridge, now thriving and changed after years of absence, forces the family to confront new alliances, buried secrets, and the question of how much they are willing to sacrifice for home and for each other.
While the Frasers hold the line against outside threats, it’s those within that could prove most dangerous. As MGM+ teases, “family secrets finally coming to light threaten to tear them apart from the inside.” For a series that has always balanced historical upheaval with intimate, emotional storytelling, this final chapter looks set to deliver both on an epic scale.
Season seven left fans with several cliffhangers still to be resolved. From the fate of Claire and Jamie’s first daughter, Faith, to the uncertain future of their time-travelling descendants, Brianna (Sophie Skelton (Day of the Dead)) and Roger (Richard Rankin (Trust Me)), who continue to navigate the challenges of life between centuries.
Also returning for the final run are John Bell (The Hobbit), David Berry (A Place to Call Home), Charles Vandervaart (Lost in Space), and Izzy Meikle-Small (Never Let Me Go), alongside guest stars from across the show’s long history.
Behind the scenes, ‘Outlander’ remains in the hands of its veteran creative team, including executive producers Matthew B. Roberts, Ronald D. Moore, Maril Davis, Toni Graphia, Luke Schelhaas, and the show’s leading stars Caitríona Balfe and Sam Heughan. The series is produced by Sony Pictures Television and continues to be one of the studio’s most successful international titles.
Since its debut, ‘Outlander’ has achieved something rare in modern television – maintaining passionate fan devotion over a decade while continually reinventing itself across continents and time periods. It’s spanned 18th-century Scotland, revolutionary America, and modern-day Britain, weaving together themes of love, freedom, and survival against the backdrop of history itself.
With its eighth season marking the end of the main saga, the Outlander universe will live on through ‘Outlander: Blood of My Blood’, a prequel series exploring the origins of Jamie’s parents, also set to stream on MGM+ internationally.
‘Outlander’ Season 8 premieres Saturday, 7th March 2026, exclusively on MGM+ UK and on Friday, March 6, 2026, on Starz in the USA.
