HBO Developing ‘V for Vendetta’ TV Series from DC Studios

by Dave Elliott

A new television adaptation of ‘V for Vendetta’ is in development at HBO, Variety has exclusively reported.

According to the outlet, the series is being written by Pete Jackson (Somewhere Boy, The Death of Bunny Munro), with James Gunn and Peter Safran of DC Studios serving as executive producers. They’ll be joined by Ben Stephenson via Poison Pen and Leanne Klein from Wall to Wall Media, part of Warner Bros. Television Studios UK. The series would be produced by Warner Bros. Television.

For clarity, this is Pete Jackson, the BAFTA-nominated British writer, not Peter Jackson of The Lord of the Rings fame, though a crossover between anarchists and orcs would certainly be memorable!

First appearing as a comic serial written by Alan Moore and illustrated by David Lloyd, V for Vendetta debuted in 1982 in the British anthology Warrior before DC Comics began publishing it in 1988. The story takes place in a dystopian future Britain ruled by the fascistic Norsefire party, where an anarchist known only as V, recognisable by his iconic Guy Fawkes mask, plots to overthrow the regime with the help of young Evey Hammond.

Should the project move forward, it will become the latest live-action DC Studios series to land at HBO. The network recently scored major success with The Penguin, starring Colin Farrell and Cristin Milioti, which followed Matt Reeves’ The Batman and went on to win nine Emmy Awards. HBO also has Lanterns, a Green Lantern drama starring Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre, due in early 2026.

HBO previously explored Moore’s work with the critically acclaimed 2019 series Watchmen, serving as a sequel to the original graphic novel by Moore and Dave Gibbons.

Jackson, who was nominated for a BAFTA TV Award for Somewhere Boy, also penned the upcoming Sky Atlantic series The Death of Bunny Munro, starring Matt Smith, based on the book by Nick Cave.

The last major adaptation of V for Vendetta came in 2005, when Hugo Weaving portrayed V opposite Natalie Portman as Evey. Directed by James McTeigue from a screenplay by the Wachowskis, the film earned more than $130 million worldwide and remains a cult favourite. Warner Bros. will re-release the movie in cinemas in November 2026 to mark its 20th anniversary.

‘V for Vendetta’ is currently in development at HBO, so may, or may not, make it to series. We’ll let you know when we hear more!
