Geektown Radio: The Geektown Awards 2025 Launch Episode – Cutting Down the Chaos

by Dave Elliott

The Geektown Awards are officially live for 2025… which means it’s time for the annual tradition of locking Dave, Matt and Gray in a metaphorical room and forcing them to battle through the infamously huge long list of TV, films and video games to decide what actually makes the shortlist.

This year’s long list was particularly ridiculous, spanning everything from ‘Black Doves’ and ‘Slow Horses’ to ‘Clair Obscur: Expedition 33’, ‘Wake Up Dead Man’, and about twenty different “Season 1” shows. The internal debate was, as always, spirited… The term “spirited” here is doing a lot of heavy lifting.

Across the episode, the three of us go category by category through the giant spreadsheet, chopping, arguing, pleading, and occasionally remembering that a show existed at the last second. Gray bravely defends ‘Bookish’. Matt tries to sneak ‘Silo’ back into eligibility (despite it airing last year). Dave completely forgets ‘Splinter Cell’ exists for five minutes. Democracy in action.

You’ll hear moments like…

  • Matt arguing passionately for ‘Shrinking’ in the drama category… until realising it probably belongs in comedy
  • Dave repeatedly pointing out streaming platforms that “might be a bit niche”
  • Gray wrestling with the moral dilemma of keeping Clarkson’s Farm in a category
  • All three of us breaking into open despair at the size of the Game of the Year list
  • A surprisingly heated exchange about live-action ‘Moana’
  • And the annual philosophical question: “Should Doctor Who even be in this category this year?”

The full long list used in the episode comes from the internal staff document, where the options are first gathered and colour-coded for potential inclusion, and the back-and-forth choices throughout the episode, where nothing was taken too seriously… except cutting the thing down to size.

If you want to hear how the final shortlists on the Awards page came to be, which shows barely survived the cull, which games triumphed, and why we all grimaced at least once per category, the full launch episode is right here.

And of course…
