Apple TV has unveiled a first look at the second season of ‘Sugar’, confirming the stylish neo-noir detective drama will return this June with Colin Farrell once again leading the charge.
The eight-episode second run brings back Los Angeles private detective and film obsessive John Sugar for a brand-new case. As with the first season, the series leans hard into classic private-eye storytelling, but filters it through a contemporary, off-kilter lens that made the show stand out on its debut.
Although… without spoiling anything, that really is only half the story. Whilst ‘Sugar’ is very much a solid, enjoyable, well-crafted and engaging contemporary PI drama, about halfway through its first season it pulls off one of those genuinely jaw-dropping “wait… WHAT?” moments that instantly recontextualises everything you thought you were watching. It is the kind of left-field twist that sends you scrambling back through earlier episodes, and comfortably earns a place alongside television’s great shock moments, right up there with the instant Buffy’s mum casually asked, “If you’re going out, why don’t you take your sister?”
In season two, John Sugar is drawn into the search for the troubled older brother of a rising local boxer, a case that soon intertwines with his ongoing hunt for his missing sister. What begins as a personal investigation expands into a much darker, city-spanning conspiracy, forcing Sugar to confront uncomfortable questions about himself and how far he is willing to go to do what he believes is right.
Alongside Colin Farrell, the new season introduces a fresh cast including Jin Ha (Pachinko), Raymond Lee (Quantum Leap), Tony Dalton (Better Call Saul), Laura Donnelly (The Nevers), Sasha Calle (The Flash) and special guest star Shea Whigham (Boardwalk Empire).
Behind the scenes, ‘Sugar’ continues under the guidance of showrunner Sam Catlin, who executive produces alongside Simon Kinberg, Audrey Chon, Colin Farrell, Scott Greenberg and Chip Vucelich. The series was created by Mark Protosevich.
The first season was widely praised, being described as “one of the best neo-noir thrillers in years” with “one of the greatest plot twists in recent TV history,” and is currently available to stream in full on Apple TV.
