‘Rebus’ Season 2 Begins Filming As BBC Announces New Cast For Richard Rankin Drama

BBC drama ‘Rebus’ is officially back in production, with Richard Rankin (Outlander) reprising his role as Detective John Rebus for the second series of the acclaimed crime drama.

Filming is now underway in and around Edinburgh and Glasgow, with the six-part second season set to debut on BBC iPlayer, BBC One and BBC Scotland in 2027.

Based on the best-selling books by Ian Rankin, and written by Gregory Burke, ‘Rebus’ reimagines the iconic Scottish detective for a contemporary audience. The second series will continue to explore Rebus’s complicated world as he navigates violent crime, personal conflict, and the uneasy space where criminal power meets respectable society.

The new run will dig into the links between violent criminals and the professional bourgeois world of law and finance, where police sometimes fear to tread.

Joining the cast for season two are John Michie (Karen Pirie, Ridley), Stephen McCole (Shetland, Vigil), Emily Barber (The Wayfinders, Mobland), Lorne MacFadyen (Starstruck, Operation Mincemeat), Conor Berry (Vigil, Karen Pirie), Ivan Ivashkin (The Capture, Bloods), Olga Safronova (The Fatigued, Second Spring), Douglas Russell (Adolescence, Department Q), Alexis Rodney (Death In Paradise, Mix Tape), Reece Montague (The Primrose Railway Children) and Joshua Haynes (Crime, Granite Harbour).

They join returning regulars including Brian Ferguson as Michael Rebus, Lucie Shorthouse as DC Siobhan Clarke, Amy Manson as Rhona Moncrieffe, Neshla Caplan as Chrissie Rebus, Stuart Bowman as Ger Cafferty, Noof Ousellam as Darryl Christie, Thoren Ferguson as Malcolm Fox, Mia McKenzie as Sammy Rebus, Andrew John Tait as Neil MacKenzie and Cassidy Little as Cammy.

“There’s a real sense of excitement about stepping back into Rebus’ world. We were incredibly fortunate with the team we assembled for the first series, and it’s a genuine pleasure to be returning alongside so many familiar faces, both in front of and behind the camera. At the same time, we’re welcoming some fantastic new talent this season, and it’s already exciting to see the energy, ideas and depth they’re bringing to the story.

“What I’ve always loved about Rebus is that he’s such a richly complex character. He’s fiercely driven, deeply flawed, endlessly determined and often at war with himself. The first series launched as a full box set on BBC iPlayer in 2024, and went on to pick up strong reviews and audiences. According to the BBC, the debut episode attracted 6.3 million viewers across all platforms, while the show also won three RTS Scotland awards for Best Drama, Writer and Director.

The drama forms part of the BBC’s growing slate of Scotland-based productions, alongside shows such as ‘Shetland’, ‘Vigil’, ‘Granite Harbour’, ‘Half Man’, ‘Mint’, ‘Sutherland’, ‘The Young Team’ and ‘Grams’.

‘Rebus’ Season 2 is produced by Eleventh Hour Films for BBC iPlayer, BBC Scotland and BBC One. The series is executive produced by Paula Cuddy, Jill Green, Eve Gutierrez, Niall MacCormick, Gregory Burke and Ian Rankin for Eleventh Hour Films, Gavin Smith for BBC Scotland and Stephanie Fyfe for the BBC. Niall MacCormick directs all six episodes, with Angela Murray producing. Sony Pictures Television distributes the drama internationally.
