This sounds wonderfully odd. FX has ordered ‘Legends’, a new limited series created by Charlie Hunnam (Sons of Anarchy, Monster: The Ed Gein Story) which reunites much of the ‘Sons of Anarchy’ cast for a meta-thriller where they play themselves and discover the danger at a fan convention is very, very real.
The setup is delightfully simple and just a little bit bonkers. More than a decade after ‘Sons of Anarchy’, the cast reunites at a fan convention. However, the line between their fictional biker brotherhood and real life begins to blur, leaving the fractured group facing a genuine threat more dangerous than anything they encountered on the show.
Alongside Charlie Hunnam, the actors playing themselves include Ron Perlman (Hellboy, Hand of God), Katey Sagal (Married… with Children, The Conners), Maggie Siff (Billions, Mad Men), Mark Boone Junior (Batman Begins, Paradise City), Tommy Flanagan (Power Book IV: Force, Peaky Blinders), Kim Coates (Bad Blood, Godless) and Theo Rossi (Luke Cage, The Penguin), with more cast still to be announced.
So, essentially, someone has looked at the reunion panels you get at conventions and thought, “What if this suddenly turned into an actual thriller?” Given the history and chemistry between this particular group of actors, that could be enormous fun if they fully commit to the meta premise.
“When Charlie brought us this inspired idea, we instantly sparked to his bold and entertaining vision,” said Nick Grad, FX Entertainment President. “Charlie’s talents are on full display as a writer, performer and executive producer, leading the real-life brotherhood on an adventure that is both a love letter to the series and a fun meta twist on what fans think they know.”
‘Legends’ is developed and executive produced by Hunnam and Jonathan Groff, with Rob Mac, Nicholas Frenkel and Jackie Cohn also serving as executive producers. FX Productions and 20th Television produce the limited series.
The project also continues Hunnam’s recent relationship with FX following his performance as serial killer Ed Gein in ‘Monster: The Ed Gein Story’, which earned him Emmy, Golden Globe, Actor Award and Critics Choice Award nominations. He is also currently filming the BBC adaptation of John le Carré’s ‘Legacy of Spies’.
FX has announced ‘Legends’ for FX and Hulu in the US. It is expected to premiere on Disney+ in the UK. No premiere date has been announced yet.
