It is time to get dangerous again, as Disney+ has greenlit ‘Darkwing Duck‘, an all-new animated continuation featuring a rather impressive voice cast.
For the past 35 years, Darkwing Duck has been trapped in his worst nightmare: an alternate world where nobody has heard of his superhero exploits. However, his fortunes change when a rebellious teenager named Duckie arrives with knowledge of his heroic past and drags the ego-fuelled vigilante back into action.
Together, the unlikely duo will take on returning enemies including Negaduck and Megavolt, while reuniting with familiar allies Launchpad, Gosalyn and Morgana in an effort to save the entire universe. It is a wonderfully meta way to revive the character, placing Darkwing in a world where his own glory days have effectively been forgotten.
Mark Hamill (Batman: The Animated Series, Batman: Arkham Asylum) leads the cast as Drake Mallard, aka Darkwing Duck, with Seth Rogen (The Muppet Show) taking over as Launchpad McQuack. Lizzy Caplan (Party Down) voices Gosalyn Mallard, while Lilimar (Inside Out 2) plays the mysterious new teenager Duckie.
The wider voice cast includes Dan Stevens (Legion, Solar Opposites) as Glade McTowers, Tiffany Shepis (Star Trek: Picard) as Rosa, Kathryn Newton (Avengers: Doomsday) as Firecracker, Teo Briones (Final Destination Bloodlines) as Timb, Tyler Dean Flores (Neon) as Pondsy, Katie Rich (Saturday Night Live) as Officer Shanks, and Nat Faxon (The Descendants) as Officer Webb.
The new series comes from Sean Tretta (Star Trek: Picard) and Borja Peña Gorostegui (Lost & Crowned), who both serve as executive producers. Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, Alex McAtee and Gabby Grantham are producing through Point Grey Pictures.
Tad Stones, creator of the original ‘Darkwing Duck’, also consulted on the development of the new adventures.
“Like every other fan of the original show, I’m excited to see Darkwing getting dangerous again in a whole new series,” said Stones.
The original Emmy-nominated series ran for 91 episodes, initially premiering on Disney Channel before also airing on ABC and in syndication from 1991. Darkwing later returned in the most recent version of ‘DuckTales’, while the original series is currently available to stream on Disney+.
‘Darkwing Duck‘ does not yet have a premiere date, but will stream exclusively on Disney+.
