Apple TV has revealed the first images and a January premiere for ‘The Wanted Man‘, an eight-part crime drama starring Hugh Laurie (‘House’, ‘The Night Manager’). He plays Felix Carmichael, a powerful crime boss who discovers that being feared on the outside offers little protection once somebody on the inside decides to betray him.
Felix is the head of a notorious British crime syndicate called The Capital. When Apple first announced the series, it described him as a man who had remained untouchable for 20 years. That run ends with his arrest and imprisonment at Staplehurst, where he learns that one of his own people has turned against him. Worse, the traitor is moving to dismantle the empire Felix built while he is stuck behind bars.
The newly released synopsis puts Felix’s family and fortune at stake too. Surviving prison will mean confronting the brutality that helped him gain power in the first place, but Felix has a more immediate plan: escape. If he gets out, there is still the small matter of finding out who betrayed him and what is left of his organisation.
That gives the series two mysteries to play with. Who was close enough to bring Felix down, and how much control does he really have once he can no longer give orders from the top? Apple is keeping the answer to the first one under wraps for now.
Alongside Laurie, the cast includes Thandiwe Newton (‘Westworld’), Fionn Whitehead (Dunkirk), Gina McKee (My Policeman), Hazel Doupe (‘Say Nothing’), Elliott Heffernan (Blitz) and Stephen Dillane (‘Game of Thrones’). Apple has not yet said which characters they play, leaving plenty of room for speculation about Felix’s family, his allies and the person who sold him out.
Behind the scenes, the series comes from George Kay, creator of ‘Hijack’ and writer of ‘Lupin’. Kay created and wrote ‘The Wanted Man’ and serves as showrunner and executive producer. Laurie is also an executive producer, alongside Willow Grylls and Matt Sandford, with David Meanti serving as series producer. New Pictures and Kay’s Observatory Pictures co-produce, and Jakob Verbruggen directs.
Apple will release the first two episodes together, then add one each Wednesday through the end of the eight-episode run. So, while Felix is in a hurry to get out of Staplehurst, viewers will have to wait a week between each stage of his plan.
