About This Film

Sky Cinema Friday Premiere – Sky Original – Dead Man’s Wire is a crime thriller film directed by Gus Van Sant and written by Austin Kolodney, working with historical consultants Alan Berry and Mark Enochs, who together made the 2018 documentary Dead Man’s Line examining the same events.  It stars Bill Skarsgård as Kiritsis, alongside an ensemble cast including Dacre Montgomery, Cary Elwes, Myha’la, Colman Domingo, and Al Pacino.

Dead Man’s Wire is based on a real 1977 hostage crisis in Indianapolis. The film follows Tony Kiritsis, played by Bill Skarsgård, a desperate and increasingly unstable real-estate developer who believes a mortgage company cheated him out of a business deal. In retaliation, he takes mortgage executive Richard Hall (Montgomery) hostage using a shotgun rigged with a “dead man’s wire” — a mechanism designed to kill the hostage if anyone tries to intervene.

As the tense three-day standoff unfolds, the media, police, and public become captivated by the spectacle, while Tony uses radio and television appearances to air his grievances against corporate power and financial injustice. The movie blends psychological drama with social commentary, drawing comparisons to classic hostage dramas like Dog Day Afternoon.
