Prime Video is already sharpening the axes for a second season of ‘Bloodaxe‘, announcing three additional cast members while production continues in Ireland. The historical drama’s first season has yet to make its debut, but work on the next chapter is well underway. Clearly, there is plenty more throne-grabbing to be done.
Joining the series in recurring roles are Maddy Ambus (‘The Return of Stanley Atwell’, ‘Utopia’), Steven Brand (‘Saw X’, ‘The Scorpion King’) and Lasse Steen (‘The Promised Land’, ‘What Lies Between Us’). There is a small wrinkle in that last piece of casting news, however: Steen’s character will actually be introduced during Season 1 before appearing in the second season.
Three More Faces Join The Norse Saga
Prime Video has not revealed character names or further details about the trio’s roles in this announcement, so we will have to wait to discover where they fit into the series’ tangled web of rivalries and loyalties.
All three have been announced as recurring cast members, rather than series regulars. For Steen, the news also establishes a connection between the two seasons, although precisely how his character becomes involved remains under wraps. With the first season still to arrive, there is plenty left for viewers to discover before we start picking sides in the next round of royal disputes.
What Is ‘Bloodaxe’ About?
Created, written and executive produced by Michael and Horatio Hirst, ‘Bloodaxe’ follows the rise of Erik Bloodaxe, one of history’s most famous Norse raiders, played by Xavier Molyneux. Alongside him is his formidable wife Gunnhild, Mother of Kings, played by Jessica Madsen.
The first season centres on their fight for the throne of Norway, where fierce rivals, shifting loyalties and bloody betrayals make gaining power considerably more complicated than simply finding a comfortable chair and putting a crown on.
Their struggle also reaches beyond Norway. Ruthless kings from other Scandinavian countries become drawn into the conflict, alongside a powerful English ruler, as the threat of war grows. The setup promises a saga with both a central partnership and a wider battle for power, giving Erik and Gunnhild plenty to contend with at home and abroad.
Who Is Behind The Series?
MGM Television produces the drama, with Michael and Horatio Hirst also serving as showrunners.
The executive producing team additionally includes Morgan O’Sullivan through O’Sullivan Productions, Steve Stark through Toluca Pictures, Arturo Interian, John Weber and Sheila Hockin. Season 2 is currently filming in Ireland, although this latest announcement does not reveal its storyline.
For now, the immediate question for viewers is when we can actually meet Erik, Gunnhild and the rest of this evidently very busy kingdom. The casting update gives us another glimpse of the ensemble, but leaves the first season’s launch details for a future announcement.
‘Bloodaxe‘ Season 1 will premiere exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. This announcement does not include a UK premiere date.
