ABC Pick Up 6 New Shows Including Comedy From Scrub’s Zach Braff & Medical Drama From House’s David Shore

ABC has gone on a massive buying spree, handing out series orders to 6 new shows, including a new comedy created by Scrub’s Zach Braff, and a new medical drama from House’s David Shore, starring Bates Motel’s Freddie Highmore.

The Good Doctor stars Freddie Highmore as Shaun Murphy, a young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome who relocates from a quiet country life to join a prestigious hospital’s surgical unit. Alone in the world and unable to personally connect with those around him, Shaun uses his extraordinary medical gifts to save lives and challenge the skepticism of his colleagues.

If you think this sounds a bit like a younger version of House, that’s probably because it comes from David Shore, the man behind the popular medical drama. It’s actually based on a South Korean show, and Hawaii Five-O’s Daniel Dae Kim is exec producing.

Joining Highmore on the show are Antonia Thomas (Misfits, Homefront, Lovesick), Richard Schiff (The West Wing, The Affair), Nicholas Gonzalez (Pretty Little Liars, Frequency), Chuku Modu (Game of Thrones), Irene Keng (Harry’s Law, Grey’s Anatomy), Beau Garrett (Girlfriends’ Guide to Divorce), and Hill Harper (Limitless, Homeland).

Zach Braff’s as-yet-untitled comedy (previously known as ‘Start-Up’), is based on Alex Blumberg’s Start-Up podcast, and sees Braff star as a man in his 30’s who decides, with his wife and kids, to give up his well paying radio journalism job and start his own business.

The show teams Braff back up with Scrubs co-executive producer Matt Tarses, who is writing the series, and co-stars Michael Imperioli (The Sopranos, Hawaii Five-0, Lucifer), Tiya Sircar (Star Wars Rebels’ Sabine Wren, The Good Place), Hillary Anne Matthews (Single by 30, Drive Share), Elisha Henig and Audyssie James. Braff directed the pilot.

Also picked up was The Gospel of Kevin from the creators of Reaper, which stars Jason Ritter (Parenthood, The Event) as Kevin Finn, a man in a downward spiral of despair, who is visited by a celestial being, and tasks him with a mission… to save the world! The show is described as a ‘light drama’.

The pilot was directed by Paul McGuigan (Sherlock, Luke Cage), and written by Tara Butters and Michele Fazekas (Agent Carter, Dollhouse & Hawaii Five-0). Co-starring are J. August Richards (Agents Of SHIELD, Angel), JoAnna Garcia Swisher (Once Upon a Time’s Ariel), Chloe East (Liv and Maddie), Dustin Ybarra (The Goldbergs, Gotham), and India de Beaufort (Younger, One Tree Hill).

Unfortunately his plan spectacularly backfires when he wins the election!

The show is written by Jeremy Bronson (The Mindy Project, Grandfathered, Speechless), and co-stars Yvette Nicole Brown (Community, The Odd Couple), Lea Michele (Glee, Scream Queens), Marcel Spears, and Bernard David Jones (Meet the Browns).

The cast is led by Steve Zahn (Modern Family, Treme), with Natalie Martinez (Under the Dome, CSI: NY), Sandrine Holt (MacGyver, House of Cards, The Returned), Rick Gomez (Justified, Band of Brothers), Jay Karnes (12 Monkeys, The Shield, Sons of Anarchy), Marcuis Harris (Vice Principals, Animal Kingdom), Simone Kessel (Terra Nova, Of Kings and Prophets, Hercules), Kelly Missal (One Life to Live), Rob Campbell (Law & Order), Grant Harvey (The Secret Life of the American Teenager), Bailey Skodje (UnREAL), Luc Roderique (The 100, The Flash) and Tommy Bastow (EastEnders).
