Netflix Orders ‘The Good Cop’ Dramedy Starring Tony Danza

This will be one of those announcements where half the reader will be going, “Wow! Really? Tony Danza?” and the rest will be going “Tony Who?” – I’m sure there will be a few making jokes about Elton John writing a song saying he wanted him to “hold me closer”, but we’re going to ignore those people, as they are silly…

Tony Danza has been in pretty steady work over the last few years, appearing in various tv movies, and Joseph Gordon-Levitt’s ‘Don Jon’. However, he’s best known for his iconic 80’s roles in ‘Taxi’, and as live-in housekeeper, Tony, in ‘Who’s the Boss?’

His new Netflix show, ‘The Good Cop‘, comes from ‘Monk’ creator Andy Breckman and stars Danza as Tony Sr., a disgraced, rule-breaking, retired NYPD officer. His son, Tony Jr., is an NYPD detective and took the complete opposite path – earnest, honest, and always follows the rules. As they live together, ‘Dad’ can’t help but stick his nose into Junior’s cases, so this ‘odd couple’ become unofficial partners as Tony Sr. offers his overly-cautious son blunt, street-wise advice on everything from handling suspects to handling women.

“We’re excited to bring viewers the return of Tony Danza, one of television’s most beloved icons,” commented Cindy Holland, Netflix’s VP Original Content. “The Good Cop is a funny, charming procedural series that we think our members will love.”

Although the description doesn’t leap off the page as anything too original, the fact it has the creator of ‘Monk’ behind it, and Netflix rarely pick a bad show, it actually has me quite intrigued.

“Many cop shows feature dark and provocative material: psycho-sexual killers; twisted, grim, flawed detectives,” comments writer and showrunner Breckman. “Many address the most controversial issues of the day. I watch a lot of them. God bless ’em all. But the show I want to produce is playful, family-friendly and a celebration of old-fashioned puzzle-solving.”

No air date yet for ‘The Good Cop‘ but we’ll let you know when we hear more.
