Westworld Will Return For Season 2 In Spring 2018

by Dave Elliott

It’s been a long long wait, but thanks to actress Evan Rachel Wood we now have some idea when we will be able to return to the brilliant Westworld.

A fan tweeted at her “can you please tell us when Westworld will be returning!? I’m going crazy”, and, whilst usually you never get a response from actors (mainly because they usually don’t know), Evan Rachel Wood came back with the goods…

Set in a futuristic theme park staffed by artificial beings, guests of ‘Westworld’ can live out their wildest fantasies. However, when the robots begin to run amok, the guests find themselves in a place where anything can happen.

Writer/director Jonathan Nolan announced pretty early on that season 2 would be delayed until 2018, over 12 months since the first season, due to the complex nature of the show. Something which is likely to get even more complex next season as it looks like the series may expand out of Westworld and into the other theme parks, some of which we caught a glimpse of in the season 1 finale.

As all hell broke loose at the end of season 1, we see some of the characters pass through the holding/development area of Samurai World, the ancient Japan-themed park, so it seems likely we may see that pop-up. Whilst speaking with THR last year Nolan commented about the possibility of us seeing more parks saying “Well, I’ve been practising with my samurai sword…” The original movie and books also featured Futureworld, Spa World, Medieval World and Roman World, so there are a number of other places the show could go outside of its original wild west setting.

When it comes to the cast, we do know Evan Rachel Wood (Dolores), Ed Harris (Man in Black), Jeffrey Wright (Bernard), Thandie Newton (Maeve), James Marsden (Teddy) and Luke Hemsworth (Ashley) all return, as will Jimmi Simpson (William), indicating we will be bouncing around time periods again. Louis Herthum (Dolores’ father Peter Abernathy) and Talulah Riley (Angela) will both return, and have been upped to season regulars this year.

Gustaf Skarsgård (‘Vikings’), Fares Fares (‘Tyrant’, ‘Rogue One’), Betty Gabriel (‘Good Girls Revolt’), Jonathan Tucker (‘Kingdom’, ‘Justified’), Neil Jackson (‘Sleepy Hollow’) and Katja Herbers (‘Divorce’, ‘The Americans’, ‘The Leftovers’) are all new cast for season 2.

Westworld‘ Season 2 will come to Sky Atlantic in Spring 2018.
