Ryan Murphy Signs $300 Million Deal With Netflix!

Ryan Murphy, the man behind ‘American Horror Story’, ‘American Crime Story’, ‘Feud’, and a host of other shows has just become a very wealthy man thanks to an exclusive deal with Netflix!

Murphy is trading his longtime home at Fox for the streaming giant in a deal believed to be worth $300 million which will see him produce new series and films exclusively at Netflix. “The history of this moment is not lost on me,” commented Murphy about the move. “I am a gay kid from Indiana who moved to Hollywood in 1989 with $55 dollars in savings in my pocket, so the fact that my dreams have crystallized and come true in such a major way is emotional and overwhelming to me. I am awash in genuine appreciation for Ted Sarandos, Reed Hastings and Cindy Holland at Netflix for believing in me and the future of my company which will continue to champion women, minorities and LGBTQ heroes and heroines, and I am honored and grateful to continue my partnership with my friends and peers at Fox on our existing shows.”

Before you get all panicked about losing your favourite shows, ‘American Horror Story’, ‘American Crime Story’, ‘Feud’, ‘9-1-1’ and the upcoming ‘Pose’ won’t be moving as part of this deal. This 5-year agreement only covers new shows and films moving forward.

“I wish Ryan well, and I know everyone at our company feels the same,” added Dana Walden, Fox TV Group Chairman who has been working closely with Murphy at Fox. “We are lucky to have so many projects with him.”

Murphy is the latest in a long line of producers who have chosen to plant their flag at a streaming service over traditional broadcast media. Shonda Rhimes (‘Grey’s Anatomy’, ‘HTGAWM’, ‘Scandal’) has signed a similar exclusive deal for new series with Netflix, as has ‘Orange Is the New Black’/’Weeds’ Jenji Kohan, and ‘Friends’/’Grace and Frankie’ writer Marta Kauffman. ‘The Walking Dead’s’ Robert Kirkman recently signed an overall deal for new shows with Amazon, as did ‘The Gilmore Girls’/’Marvellous Mrs Masiel’ creator Amy Sherman-Palladino.

Murphy already has 2 new series in the works at Netflix – ‘Ratched‘ which stars Sarah Paulson in the origin story of ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’s’ Nurse Ratched, and ‘The Politician’, which is an hour-long comedy starring Tony award winner Ben Platt. However, expect many more new shows and movies from him on Netflix over the next few years!
