As you are probably aware, Netflix’s royal drama The Crown is changing up its cast as the show heads into the 3rd Season. Olivia Colman had already been announced as taking over the role of Queen Elizabeth from Claire Foy. Now they have finally found their new Prince Philip – ‘Outlander’ Star Tobias Menzies.

Show creator Peter Morgan stated when the series was first announced that they would be re-cast every two seasons, rather than using makeup to age the actors. Menzies replaces Matt Smith who played the part in seasons 1 & 2.

Menzies is a face that will be very familiar to fans of ‘Outlander’ where he starred as Frank Randall and Jonathan “Black Jack” Randall in the time-travelling drama. He also starred as Edmure Tully in ‘Game of Thrones’ James Fitzjames in ‘The Terror’, Geoffrey Dromgoole in ‘The Night Manager’, and Brutus in the brilliant ‘Rome’.

Colman and Menzies will be joined by Helena Bonham Carter who succeeds Vanessa Kirby as the older Princess Margaret.

Season 2 of ‘The Crown’ ended with the birth of the Queen and Philip’s 4th and last child Edward in 1964. Details of the 3rd season have yet to be released, but it will obviously start at some point after that. ‘The Crown’ as always been about the relationship between Buckingham Palace and 10 Downing Street, so it’s likely Season 3 will span the 70’s era of UK politics which saw Harold Wilson become Prime Minister twice, with Edward Heath taking office in the middle. This era also includes Princess Margaret’s divorce, the 1972 miners’ strike and the assassination of Lord Mountbatten, so there is lots to get their teeth into. It will also feature a young Camilla Parker Bowles whom Charles first met in 1971, and we could potentially see a young Diana Spencer towards the end of this season, as they first meet in 1977.

The CrownSeasons 1 & 2 are currently available on Netflix. No official air date has been given for Season 3 yet, but it’s likely to be late 2018/early 2019.
