Billy Dee Williams Returning As Lando Calrissian In Episode IX

Ever since JJ Abrams embarked on his reboot of the ‘Star Wars’ franchise, we’ve seen the return of most of the OG Star Wars gang. However, one face has been absent… But according to THR, that’s all about to change, as Billy Dee Williams dons the cape once again to return to his biggest role, Lando Calrissian.

The character of Lando Calrissian first appeared in 1980’s ‘The Empire Strikes Back’, where Han travels to Cloud City on the planet of Bespin, which is run by his old friend. Whilst the trip doesn’t go so well for Han, who ends up becoming a carbonite shaped wall hanging destined for Jabba The Hutt, Calrissian goes on to join the Rebels and helps rescue his old drinking buddy. He then leads the attack on the second Death Star in his old ship (lost to Han in a bet), the Millennium Falcon.

Although Williams has portrayed Calrissian in a number of video games and voiced him the ‘Star Wars Rebels’ series, this will be the first time he’s appeared on the big screen as the character since ‘Return Of The Jedi’. A younger version of Calrissian did recently appear in the ‘Solo’ movie, played brilliantly by Donald Glover.

JJ Abrams returns to the helm to direct the as-yet-untitled ‘Star Wars: Episode IX’, after Rian Johnson’s ‘The Last Jedi’ somewhat split Star Wars fandom due to a few controversial choices for our heroes. The final movie of this sequel trilogy will reunite the cast of Daisy Ridley (Rey), John Boyega (Finn), Oscar Isaac (Poe) and Adam Driver (Kylo Ren), amongst other. As far as we know right now, Williams will be the only original cast member to appear in the film, mainly due to Han and Luke both having been killed on screen and the sad passing of Carrie Fisher in real life. Although, we do have a sneaking suspicion a force-ghost Luke popping up wouldn’t be out of the realms of possibility.

‘Star Wars: Episode IX’ will arrive in cinemas in December 2019.
