Jeremy Renner & Jamie Foxx Star In ‘Spawn’ Movie From Todd McFarlane
Comic book character ‘Spawn’ could be returning to the big screen and has bagged a couple of A-List stars to take on the major roles.
It was announced back in May that Jamie Foxx would take the lead as Albert “Al” Francis Simmons, a former officer of the US Marine Corps and member of a CIA covert ops elite task force. Whilst on a mission in Botswana, Simmons is killed and send to hell, due to his job as a CIA assassin, but he makes a deal with the demon Malebolgia to return as a Hellspawn in exchange for seeing his wife and daughter one last time. However, he is double-crossed by the demon, as he returns to find 5 years have passed. His wife has married his best friend, and he is stuck in his demon form. Now known as Spawn, he takes his anger out on street punks and gangs, enlisting the help of brilliant detective ‘Twitch’ Williams to provide him with intel and backup. Jeremy Renner will take the role of Twitch.
The film comes from Blumhouse Productions, and sees ‘Spawn’ comic book creator, Todd McFarlane, make his directorial debut, so you at least know the film is being made by someone who understands the subject matter! “Jason [Blume] and I feel we have a strong package here,” commented McFarlane in an interview with Deadline. “Academy Award-winning and Academy Award-nominated actor. As a first time director, I guess I’m the weak link, but I think my brand is strong. Hopefully, when we go to studios, fairly soon, we’ll get the interest of more than one and we can pick what place will do this project justice, marketing and distributing it. We’re going to go for as close to a green light as we can get, since the development process has already been done. We’re looking for someone to say, ‘yeah cool, we’ll take it.’ It’s a reasonable budget, we’re not asking anyone to stretch. The goal here is a quality project at a reasonable price.”
Jamie Foxx is well known as the star of films such as ‘Django Unchained’, ‘Ray’, and the villain Electro in ‘The Amazing Spider-Man 2’. He’s recently starred as Little John in a new adaptation of ‘Robin Hood’ with Taron Egerton, and Johnnie Cochran biopic ‘Signal HIll’, where he plays Black Panther leader Elmer “Geronimo” Pratt.
Jeremy Renner is the star of ‘The Bourne Legacy’, ‘The Hurt Locker’ and ‘Arrival’. He is, of course, best known as Clint Barton, aka the MIA Hawkeye, in Marvel’s ‘Avengers’ movies, and it due to finally return to the franchise in the upcoming second part of the ‘Avenger: Infinity War’ story.
As you can tell by McFarlane’s comments, the ‘Spawn’ movie is currently in development, so doesn’t have a release date yet, but we’ll let you know when we hear more.
