Brendan Fraser Joins DC’s ‘Doom Patrol’ Series As Robotman

DC has added another member of Doom Patrol for their upcoming DC Universe series as Brendan Fraser joins the cast as Robotman.

‘Doom Patrol’ is a re-imagining of one of DC’s most beloved group of outcast superheroes: Robotman, Negative Man, Elasti-Girl and Crazy Jane, led by modern-day mad scientist Dr. Niles Caulder (The Chief). The Doom Patrol’s members each suffered horrible accidents that gave them superhuman abilities – but also left them scarred and disfigured. Traumatized and downtrodden, the team found purpose through The Chief, who brought them together to investigate the weirdest phenomena in existence – and to protect Earth from what they find. Part support group, part Super Hero team, the Doom Patrol is a band of super-powered freaks who fight for a world that wants nothing to do with them.

Robotman real name is Cliff Steele, a former race car driver who was in a horrific accident that left his body uninhabitable. Cliff’s brain was saved by  Caulder so Steele now lives on in a powerful robotic body. According to Deadline, who broke the news, Fraser will be voicing the character and play Cliff Steele in flashback scenes. Actor Riley Shanahan will provide the physical performance on screen in a full-body costume rather than messing around with CGI.

Fraser has starred in numerous tv and film projects, most notably as Rick O’Connell in ‘The Mummy’ franchise. More recently his tv work has included roles on ‘The Affair’, ‘Trust’ and ‘Condor’. He joins the previously announced cast of Joivan Wade (‘EastEnders’, ‘Doctor Who’) as Vic Stone, aka Cyborg, April Bowlby (‘Two and a Half Men’, ‘Drop Dead Diva’) as Elasti-Girl and Diane Guerrero (‘Orange Is the New Black’, ‘Jane the Virgin’) as Crazy Jane.

Doom Patrol is being written by Jeremy Carver (‘Supernatural’, ‘Frequency’, ‘Being Human’)who will also EP alongside Greg Berlanti, Geoff Johns and Sarah Schechter. Production will start this year with a view to airing in 2019 on DC Universe, DC’s new direct-to-consumer streaming service. Annoyingly, we still don’t have any information on the international rollout of the service yet, but we’re hoping it’s not going to be too long after the US launch in Autumn 2018.
