The Justice Society of America is coming together nicely for DC Universe’s Stargirl, as the streaming service announces Henry Thomas will take the role of Dr. Mid-Nite, whilst Brian Stapf will play Wildcat.

‘Stargirl’ follows high school sophomore Courtney Whitmore (Brec Bassinger – ‘School of Rock’) who inspires an unlikely group of young heroes to stop the villains of the past. This new DC Universe series reimagines Stargirl and the very first superhero team, the Justice Society of America, in a fun, exciting and unpredictable series.

Henry Thomas plays introspective surgeon Dr. Charles McNider, aka Dr. Mid-Nite. A brilliant and forward-thinking medical pioneer, Dr. Mid-Nite is a founding member of the Justice Society of America. With his trusty owl, he acts as the team’s resident doctor and detective.

Thomas has a long and varied career, having most recently played Young Hugh Crain in Netflix series ‘The Haunting of Hill House’, along with starring in the comedy ‘Better Things’ (coming soon to BBC Two), and playing John Adams in History’s ‘Sons of Liberty’ mini-series. However, his most famous role is still the one he played as a child star – Elliott in Steven Spielberg classic, ‘E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial’.

Brian Stapf plays former heavyweight champion Ted Grant, aka Wildcat. A founding member of the Justice Society of America, Wildcat may get knocked down, but he always stands back up. A champ through and through, Wildcat’s as good a trainer as he is a fighter.

Stapf has been making a solid living as a jobbing Hollywood actor, having played recurring roles on shows such as ‘The Walking Dead’‘Valor’, ‘The Purge’ and ‘Banshee’. He’s also popped up on series such as ‘Bloodline’, ‘Powers’, ‘House Of Cards’, ‘NCIS: New Orleans’, and ‘Treme’.

Thomas and Stapf join the other recently announced JSA members including Joel McHale (‘Community’, ‘The Great Indoors’) who takes the role of Starman, and Lou Ferrigno Jr. (‘S.W.A.T’) who will play Hourman. Anjelika Washington (‘Runaways’, ‘Young Sheldon’) has also been cast in an as-yet-unnamed part.

Stargirl‘ will be released on DC Universe in the US on August 9th, 2019, but currently does not have a UK broadcaster. However, Netflix UK has picked up the Titans series for broadcast over here in January 2019, so it would seem possible they may go for this too. We’ll let you know when we hear more.
