Syfy UK To Premiere UFO Drama ‘Project Blue Book’

by Dave Elliott

Syfy UK has picked Project Blue Book, the History Channel’s UFO drama based on the US Air Force’s attempts in the 1950’s to disprove the existence of aliens.

The series comes from Robert Zemeckis (‘Back to the Future’), and stars ‘Game of Thrones’ Aidan Gillen as brilliant college professor J. Allen Hynek who is recruited to investigate UFO-related phenomena. Hynek is teamed up with Capt. Michael Quinn, played by ‘The Vampire Diaries’ Michael Malarkey, with each episode taking inspiration from the actual declassified ‘Project Blue Book’ files, which was a real-life clandestine program run by the US Air Force in the 50s and 60s. As the duo work through thousands of cases, many of which were never solved, the show blends UFO theories with authentic historical events from one of the most mysterious eras in United States history.

Along with playing the scheming Littlefinger in ‘Game Of Thrones’, Gillen also starred in the last season of ‘Peaky Blinders’ and played the provocative godfather of modern stand-up in ‘Dave Allen At Peace’ for the BBC. Michael Malarkey has been starring in US drama ‘The Oath’ in a recurring role, but is probably best known in the UK for playing bad boy vampire turned good, Lorenzo ‘Enzo’ St. John, in ‘The Vampire Diaries’.

“This acquisition is uniquely suited for Syfy UK and, with top talent both in front and behind the camera, we know viewers will be instantly hooked by these compelling, mysterious case files,” commented Lee Raftery of NBC Universal International.

The series is also packed full of actors from various other sci-fi projects and popular shows. A few familiar faces you may spot in the trailer are Neal McDonough (‘Arrow’, ‘Legends Of Tomorrow’), Laura Mennell (‘The Man in the High Castle’, ‘Haven’), Michael Harney (‘Orange Is the New Black’), and Ksenia Solo (‘Lost Girl’, ‘Orphan Black’).

Syfy UK hasn’t set an exact UK air date for ‘Project Blue Book‘ yet, but it will premiere at some point in March 2019.
