‘Law & Order: SVU’ Renewed For Historic 21st Season

NBC has renewed Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’ for a historic 21st Season, which pushes the show into the record books as USA’s longest-running primetime live-action tv series.

‘Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’ chronicles the life and crimes of the Special Victims Unit of the New York City Police Department, an elite squad of detectives who investigate crimes of sexual assault, child abuse and domestic violence. It previously held the title of the longest-running US primetime drama currently on television, but it now surpasses the original ‘Law & Order’ and ‘Gunsmoke’ as the longest-running primetime drama ever.

In addition, it puts actress Mariska Hargitay in the record books too, as NYPD Lieutenant Olivia Benson becomes the longest-running character in a primetime live-action series. That record was previously held by ‘Gunsmoke’ actors James Arness and Milburn Stone, alongside Kelsey Grammer, who was level with the pair due to having played Frasier Crane across both ‘Frasier’ and ‘Cheers’.

“I’m deeply proud to be a part of this groundbreaking show, and humbled to make television history today,” Hargitay commented. “The longevity and continued success of SVU is a testament not only to the show’s powerful storytelling and ability to connect with viewers, but to its necessity. We have told important stories for 20 years, and we will continue to tell them.”

‘SVU’ is just one of the shows from procedural drama supremo Dick Wolf, who is responsible, not only for the ‘Law & Order’ franchise, but also a whole raft of hit series including the ‘Chicago’ franchise, and the new ‘FBI’ drama, which looks also like it may become a franchise.

“We tip our cap to Dick Wolf, Mariska Hargitay and the amazing cast and crew of SVU, who now all go into the record book,” commented Paul Telegdy and George Cheeks, Co-Chairmen, NBC. “This incredible run is an example of what happens when producers, writers and actors all come together and create a show that, year after year, speaks to its audience in a powerful way. We couldn’t be more proud of this remarkable achievement.”

Law & Order: Special Victims Unit’ airs on Universal TV in the UK.
