Gatiss & Moffat’s ‘Dracula’ To Film In Bray Studios, More Casting And Directors Announced

BBC One has announced further casting and directors for Mark Gatiss & Steven Moffat’s upcoming Dracula adaptation today, along with revealing the show will be shot at Bray Studios, the former home of the Hammer horror movies.

The 3x90min mini-series is written and created by Moffat and Gatiss and inspired by Bram Stoker’s classic novel. Three feature-length episodes will re-introduce the world to Dracula. In Transylvania in 1897, the blood-drinking Count is drawing his plans against Victorian London. And be warned: the dead travel fast.

The role of Dracula himself has already gone to Danish actor Claes Bang (‘Borgen’, The Girl in the Spider’s Web’). He will be joined by Jonathan Aris (‘Sherlock’, ‘Black Mirror: Bandersnatch’), Sacha Dhawan (The Boy With The Top Knot, ‘Marvel’s Iron Fist’), Nathan Stewart-Jarrett (‘Misfits’, ‘Adulting’), Catherine Schell (‘Doctor Who’, ‘On Her Majesty’s Secret Service’), Youssef Kerkour (‘Home’, ‘Jack Ryan’), and Clive Russell (‘Game Of Thrones’, ‘The Terror’). We don’t have any news on which characters any of these actors will be playing as yet.

Along with the impressive cast, the show isn’t skimping on the directors either. Jonny Campbell (‘Informer’, ‘Westworld’) will take episode 1, with Damon Thomas (‘Killing Eve’, ‘Penny Dreadful’) and Paul McGuigan (‘Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool’, ‘Sherlock’) directing episodes 2 and 3 respectively.

Filming on ‘Dracula’ began earlier this year at Orava Castle in Slovakia, but is now moving to England where it continues at the world famous Bray Studios – something which you feel had Mark Gatiss, in particular, jumping up and down with glee.

“It’s seriously delightful that our new Dracula is being shot at Bray Studios – the former home of Hammer Films!,” commented Gattis. “This wonderfully atmospheric and legendary studio gave birth to so many famous monsters and stars – most memorably Peter Cushing and Christopher Lee. As we watch Transylvania once again rise on the sound stages of Bray, it’s amazing to be able to say that Count Dracula has finally come home”.

Dracula (a Hartswood Films production) was commissioned for BBC One by Charlotte Moore, Director of BBC Content and Piers Wenger, Controller of BBC Drama, and is a co-production with Netflix. It is written and created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss; executive producers are Mark Gatiss, Steven Moffat and Sue Vertue for Hartswood Films, Ben Irving for the BBC and it will be handled by Larry Tanz and Carolyn Newman for Netflix.

No news on exactly when Dracula will premiere yet (although we suspect it may be late 2019/early 2020 in the ‘Sherlock’ spot). The series will premiere on BBC One in the UK and on Netflix in the rest of the world.
