Netflix Announces John Malkovich, Ben Schwartz & More Join Steve Carell & Greg Daniels ‘Space Force’

Netflix has announced a new batch of casting for the upcoming comedy series Space Force, from Steve Carell & Greg Daniels, the people behind the US sitcom ‘The Office’.

Inspired by the announcement last year by the Trump administration that they would create a division of the US armed forces to “defend satellites from attack, and perform other space-related tasks… or something…”, the show is a workplace comedy centred around the people back on Earth tasked with creating this sixth branch of the armed services… Space Force.

The 10×30-minute comedy stars Steve Carell, who also co-created and exec produces the series, as “Mark R. Naird,” a General tapped by the White House to lead a new branch of the Armed Forces with the goal of putting American “boots on the moon” by 2024. He is now joined by series regulars John Malkovich (‘The New Pope’), Ben Schwartz (‘Parks and Recreation’, ‘House of Lies’), Diana Silvers (‘Booksmart’, ‘MA’), and Tawny Newsome (‘Brockmire’). Jimmy O. Yang (‘Silicon Valley’, ‘Crazy Rich Asians’) and Alex Sparrow (‘Unreal’) also join the cast as recurring guest stars.

John Malkovich plays “Dr. Adrian Mallory”, the Head Science Advisor, who is brilliant, arrogant and hoping to prevent space from becoming the next great international battlefield. Ben Schwartz stars as “F. Tony Scarapiducci”, a self-centred media consultant whose Machiavellian goals only sometimes line up with those of Mark or Space Force. Diana Silvers portrays “Erin Naird”, popular and an A-student in Washington DC, Mark’s daughter is an outcast in Wild Horse Colorado after transferring to a remote military base and turns to delinquency. Lastly, Tawny Newsome plays “Angela Ali”, a helicopter pilot, who is ambitious and competitive, with secret dreams that she keeps close to the vest.

The two recurring roles see Jimmy O. Yang play “Doctor Chan Kaifang”, doctor Mallory’s right-hand man. Chan is a brilliant astrophysicist and rocket engineer who immigrated from China as a teenager and loves all things American, from fly fishing to the Baltimore Orioles. Alex Sparrow portrays “Yuri ‘Bobby’ Telatovich”, a charming observer from the Russian Government, who is curious about many things in Mark’s life, like his daughter, or the tech specs of the Javelin missile.

Carell co-created the series with Greg Daniels (‘The Office US’, ‘King of the Hill’, ‘Parks and Recreation’), who serves as showrunner and executive producer. Howard Klein/3Arts (‘The Office US’, ‘The Mindy Project’, ‘Parks and Recreation’) also serves as exec producer. BAFTA-nominated filmmaker Paul King (‘Paddington’, ‘Paddington 2’) has been tapped to direct two episodes of ‘Space Force’, including the pilot.

There is no premiere date yet for Space Force’ Season 1, but presumably, it will land in 2020 on Netflix worldwide. We’ll let you know when we hear more.
