Geoff Johns’ Mad Ghost Productions Joins Berlanti On Live-Action ‘Green Lantern’ Series For HBO Max

Former DC Chief Creative Officer Geoff Johns is returning to a set of characters he knows extremely well, as it’s revealed his newly formed Mad Ghost Productions will join Arrowverse’s Greg Berlanti in developing the live-action ‘Green Lantern’ series for HBO Max.

Late last year when HBO Max announced their line-up, one of the shows on the list was a live-action ‘Green Lantern’ series from Arrowverse boss Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter (‘Doom Patrol’, ‘Titans’, various Arrowverse shows). Now it seems Geoff Johns will be joining them, which makes perfect sense given the creator’s history with the subject matter.

‘Green Lantern’ is a property Johns knowns extremely well and was pivotal in shaping. In 2005 he was responsible for the return of Hal Jordan as the writer of the highly acclaimed Green Lantern: Rebirth mini-series. He continued writing on the book for nine years, and also introduced the idea of the Green Lantern Corps being just one of a spectrum of Lantern colours, each of which had their own champions. This led to the critically acclaimed Sinestro Corps War storyline, along with the creation of concepts such as as the Blue Lantern Corps, the Red Lantern Corps, and the Indigo Tribe.

This is not the first time Johns has had dealing with Green Lantern in live-action. He was co-producer and creative consultant for the (shall we say, less than well-received…) 2011 movie, and co-wrote the story with David S. Goyer for the long-gestating and yet to be produced Green Lantern Corps film. This small-screen version sees him team back up with Arrowverse creator Greg Berlanti, who he previously worked with on the new ‘Stargirl’ series, along with ‘The Flash’, ‘Batwoman’, ‘Titans’, ‘Doom Patrol’, and the upcoming ‘Superman & Lois’ series.

Not much is known about the HBO Max ‘Green Lantern’ series at the moment, other than it will be “the first live-action series delving into the Green Lantern universe.” It is said to involve two of the Lanterns from Earth, and also feature Sinestro (the Green Lantern turned evil Yellow Lantern) in some way. We don’t know which two Earth Green Lanterns may appear (there are quite a few at this point!), but we’d assume one will be Hal Jordan. The other could, possibly, have a familiar face (SPOILER WARNING for the Crisis Crossover), after it seemed John Diggle found a Green Lantern ring at the end of the Crisis event. We should point out, this new show is set to air on HBO Max, and not The CW with the other Arrowverse shows, so they may decide not to connect them, but Berlanti and Johns do like their shared universes, so it would be a good way to keep everything tied together. That is pure speculation at this point though, so we will have to wait and see!

The ‘Green Lantern’ series is currently set as “In Development” for HBO Max, so it is possible it might not make it to series, but we’ll let you know when we hear more.
