CW Developing Adaptation Of M. K. England’s YA Sci-Fi Novel ‘The Disasters’

The CW has put into development a new YA sci-fi series, based on M. K. England’s novel ‘The Disasters’, from ‘Supergirl’ writer Derek Simon and Berlanti Productions.

Described as “The Breakfast Club meets Guardians of the Galaxy”, the story is set in a near-future, where Earth has begun to colonise space. We follow a hotshot pilot called Nax Hall, who has a history of making poor life choices… So it comes as no great surprise when he finds himself kicked out of the elite military academy, Ellis Station, in less than twenty-four hours. But Nax’s one-way trip back to Earth is cut short when a terrorist group attacks the Academy.

Nax, alongside three other washouts, barely escape, but they’re also the sole witnesses to the biggest crime in the history of space colonisation… making them the perfect scapegoats! Now on the run, Nax and his fellow failures plan to pull off a dangerous heist to spread the truth. Because they may not be “Academy material,” and they may not even get along, but they’re the only ones left to step up and fight.

The series is being written by Derek Simon, who worked as writer/producer on ‘Supergirl’, and served as a staff writer on USA Network’s drama ‘Graceland’. Simon will exec produce, alongside director Lee Toland Krieger (‘Superman and Lois’, ‘Riverdale’, ‘You’, ‘Prodigal Son’) who would be behind the camera. Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and David Madden exec produce for Berlanti Productions, with John Sacchi for 5 More Minutes Productions, and Matt Groesch as producer. Berlanti Productions, 5 More Minutes Productions and Warner Bros TV co-produced the series.

‘The Disasters’ is still only in development at the moment, so might not go anywhere, but it does look like an interesting project, and very “CW”! We’ll let you know if/when we hear more!
