‘The Nevers’: Trailer Lands For New HBO Sci-Fi/Fantasy Drama Premiering 2021 On Sky Atlantic

by Dave Elliott

Sky has released the first trailer for new HBO sci-fi/fantasy drama The Nevers, which will premiere on Sky Atlantic in 2021.

From the mind of Joss Whedon, the series follows a gang of Victorian women who find themselves with unusual abilities, relentless enemies, and a mission that might change the world.

In the last years of Victoria’s reign, London is beset by the “Touched”: people — mostly women — who suddenly manifest abnormal abilities, some charming, some very disturbing. Among them are Amalia True (Laura Donnelly – ‘Outlander’), a mysterious, quick-fisted widow, and Penance Adair (Ann Skelly – ‘Vikings’), a brilliant young inventor. They are the champions of this new underclass, making a home for the Touched, while fighting the forces of… well, pretty much all the forces — to make room for those whom history as we know it has no place.

The extensive ensemble cast also includes Olivia Williams (‘Dollhouse’, ‘Counterpart’), James Norton (‘Grantchester’), Tom Riley (‘Da Vinci’s Demons’), Rochelle Neil (‘Episodes’), Eleanor Tomlinson (‘Poldark’),  Amy Manson (‘Once Upon A Time’, ‘Atlantis’), Pip Torrens (‘The Crown’), Denis O’Hare (‘This Is Us’, ‘Big Little Lies’), Zackary Momoh (‘No Offence’, ‘Doctor Sleep’), Elizabeth Berrington (‘Stella’, ‘Waterloo Road’), Kiran Sawar (‘Silent Witness’, ‘Brexit: The Uncivil War’), Anna Devlin (’12 Monkeys’, ‘Hanna’), Viola Prettejohn(‘Counterpart’), Ella Smith (‘Babylon’, ‘Horrible Histories: The Movie’), Nick Frost (‘Hot Fuzz’, ‘Sick Note’), and Ben Chaplin (‘Press’).

The drama was given a straight-to-series order by HBO in mid-2018, and Joss originally was overseeing the series, but stepped back from the day-to-day running in November last year, saying he was “genuinely exhausted” and was finding the project “more than I can handle without the work beginning to suffer.” British screenwriter Philippa Goslett (‘Little Ashes’, ‘How to Talk to Girls At Parties’), who has previously developed projects for FX, the BBC and Channel 4, stepped in as the showrunner.

‘The Nevers’ is created and executive produced by Joss Whedon. Whedon co-wrote the drama alongside ‘Buffy’ alums Jane Espenson and Doug Petrie. Bernadette Caulfield and Ilene S. Landress exec produce, alongside Petrie, Espenson and Goslett.

The Nevers‘ is set to premiere at some point (possibly April) in 2021 on Sky Atlantic in the UK and in April 2021 HBO in the USA.
