‘The 4400’: The CW Gives Straight-To-Series Order To Reboot Of The Sci-Fi Drama

The CW has handed a straight-to-series order to a reboot of sci-fi drama The 4400 the broadcaster has announced.

The series follows the story of the overlooked, undervalued, or otherwise marginalized people who vanished without a trace over the last hundred years – 4400 young adults in their reproductive prime have gone missing all over the world. Some disappearances happened as recently as a few weeks ago, while others date as far back as the day the Soviets launched the Sputnik satellite in 1957.

Now, all 4,400 show up at the sites of their original abductions. None of them has aged a day and none have any memory of where they’ve been. As the government races to analyze the potential threat and contain the story, the so-called “4400” must grapple with their return to a changed and hostile world and also contend with the reality that they’ve come back altered in ways that none of them yet understand…

Based on the original tv show, this new version comes from Ariana Jackson and Anna Fricke, the duo behind another wildly successful reboot, the Jared Padalecki series ‘Walker’. Jackson, whose previous work includes ‘Riverdale’, ‘UnREAL’ and ‘Lethal Weapon’, is set to write the drama and exec produce alongside Fricke and Laura Terry.

Created by René Echevarria and Scott Peters, the original series ran for 4 seasons between 2004-2007. It had a huge ensemble cast including Joel Gretsch, Jacqueline McKenzie, Patrick Flueger, Conchita Campbell and was arguably the role which gave Mahershala Ali his big break.

Since the original series aired, a number of shows have dealt with the idea of people returning following a mysterious disappearance. There have been various versions of ‘The Returned’ and most recently NBC’s ‘Manifest’, which has a similar premise, so it’ll be interesting to see how a reboot of this series stands up now.

The 4400reboot will premiere on The CW in the USA. No news on when it will land (although possibly Fall 2021/Winter 2022 season), or obviously, a UK broadcaster, but we’ll let you know when we hear something.
