Sky Atlantic Releases Trailer & May UK Premiere Date For ‘The Nevers’

by Dave Elliott

Sky Atlantic has released a trailer and announced sci-fi/fantasy drama The Nevers will premiere this May, with all 6 episodes of “part 1” landing as a box set on Sky and NOW.

August, 1896. Victorian London is rocked to its foundations by a supernatural event which gives certain people – mostly women – abnormal abilities, from the wondrous to the disturbing. But no matter their particular “turns,” all who belong to this new underclass are in grave danger. It falls to mysterious, quick-fisted widow Amalia True (Laura Donnelly – ‘Outlander’) and brilliant young inventor Penance Adair (Ann Skelly – ‘Vikings’) to protect and shelter these gifted “orphans.” To do so, they will have to face the brutal forces determined to annihilate their kind.

The extensive ensemble cast also includes Olivia Williams (‘Dollhouse’, ‘Counterpart’), James Norton (‘Grantchester’), Tom Riley (‘Da Vinci’s Demons’), Rochelle Neil (‘Episodes’), Eleanor Tomlinson (‘Poldark’),  Amy Manson (‘Once Upon A Time’, ‘Atlantis’), Pip Torrens (‘The Crown’), Denis O’Hare (‘This Is Us’, ‘Big Little Lies’), Zackary Momoh (‘No Offence’, ‘Doctor Sleep’), Elizabeth Berrington (‘Stella’, ‘Waterloo Road’), Kiran Sawar (‘Silent Witness’, ‘Brexit: The Uncivil War’), Anna Devlin (’12 Monkeys’, ‘Hanna’), Viola Prettejohn(‘Counterpart’), Ella Smith (‘Babylon’, ‘Horrible Histories: The Movie’), Nick Frost (‘Hot Fuzz’, ‘Sick Note’), and Ben Chaplin (‘Press’).

The drama was given a straight-to-series order by HBO in mid-2018, and Joss Whedon originally was overseeing the series, but stepped back from the day-to-day running in November last year, saying he was “genuinely exhausted” and was finding the project “more than I can handle without the work beginning to suffer.”… I’m sure there were no other reasons for him stepping away… ahem… anyhow… British screenwriter Philippa Goslett (‘Little Ashes’, ‘How to Talk to Girls At Parties’), who has previously developed projects for FX, the BBC and Channel 4, stepped in as the showrunner.

‘The Nevers’ is created and executive produced by Joss Whedon. Whedon co-wrote the drama alongside ‘Buffy’ alums Jane Espenson and Doug Petrie. Bernadette Caulfield and Ilene S. Landress exec produce, alongside Petrie, Espenson and Goslett.

The Nevers‘ is set to premiere Monday, 17th May 2021 on Sky Atlantic in the UK, with all episodes of “part 1” (the first 6 episodes) landing On Demand and on NOW. The drama premieres on April 11, 2021, at 9:00-10:00 p.m. ET/PT on HBO and HBO Max in the USA.
