‘Y: The Last Man’ Cancelled By Hulu. Showrunner Vows To Find A New Home.

FX On Hulu has opted not to renew comic book adaptation Y: The Last Man for a 2nd Season showrunner Eliza Clark has revealed, although she has vowed to look for a new home for the drama.

‘Y: The Last Man’ traverses a post-apocalyptic world in which a cataclysmic event decimates every mammal with a Y chromosome but for one cisgender man and his pet monkey. The series follows the survivors in this new world as they struggle with their efforts to restore what was lost and the opportunity to build something better. As the planet descends into a post-apocalyptic nightmare, Yorick, accompanied by a mysterious government agent, a brilliant young geneticist and his pet monkey, Ampersand, travels the world in search of his lost love and the answer to why he’s the last man on earth.

The drama stars Ben Schnetzer (‘Happy Town’, ‘Pride’) as Yorick Brown, the titular last man; Amber Tamblyn (‘Two and a Half Men’, ‘The Increasingly Poor Decisions of Todd Margaret’) as Kimberly Cunningham; Diane Lane (‘Man of Steel’) as Jennifer Brown, Yorick’s mother; Ashley Romans (‘NOS4A2’) as Agent 355; Diana Bang (‘Resident Alien’, ‘The Order’) as Allison Mann; Elliot Fletcher (‘Shameless’, ‘The Fosters’) as Sam Jordan; Juliana Canfield (‘Succession’) as Beth Deville; Marin Ireland (‘The Umbrella Academy’, ‘Sneaky Pete’) as Nora Brady; And Olivia Thirlby (‘The L Word: Generation Q’, ‘Goliath’) as Hero Brown, Yorick’s sister.

Taking to social media, showrunner Eliza Clark posted the statement “We have learned that we will not be moving forward with FX on Hulu for Season 2 of ‘Y: The Last Man’. I have never in my life been more committed to a story, and there is so much more left to tell.” She continues, “Y: The Last Man is about gender, about how oppressive systems inform identity. We had a gender diverse team of brilliant artists, led by women at almost every corner of our production. Producers, writers, directors, cinematographers, production design, costume design, stunt coordination, and more. It is the most collaborative, creatively fulfilling, and beautiful thing I have ever been a part of. I don’t want it to end.”

Clark, who developed, showran, and wrote a number of episodes on the series goes on to confirm the team’s commitment to finding the show a new home. “FX has been an amazing partner. We have loved working with them, and we’re sad YTLM is not going forward at FX on Hulu,” she commented. “But we know that someone else is going to be very lucky to have this team and this story. I have never experienced the remarkable solidarity of this many talented people. We are committed to finding Y its next home. #YLivesOn.”

As the series aired on Hulu in the USA, and STAR On Disney+ internationally, we don’t know what sort of numbers the series was getting, which is usually the reason for a series being dropped. However, the show does have a 73% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a 70% audience score, which is certainly not a bad response critically.

Original comic book creator and exec producer Brian K. Vaughan also took to social media saying “Some unexpected hard news about Y: THE LAST MAN just posted by our showrunner @elizaaclarkw, BUT…this is not the first time in twenty years I’ve seen Yorick & co. escape the seemingly inescapable! I love this show, and I’m very hopeful Y will find a new home, not just because it happens to employ more extraordinary women, people of color, and members of the LGBTQ+ community—both in front of and behind the camera—than any project I’ve ever been a part of, but because they’ve made something spectacular, the kind of thoughtful, contemporary, fearless evolution of the comic that @pia.guerra and I always wanted. These next three episodes are the very best of the season, so please keep watching, and if you want to see this journey continue as much as I do, we encourage you to let the world know: #YLivesOn.”

Y: The Last Man‘ is currently airing via STAR On Disney+ in the UK.
