Sky has released a trailer and set a May premiere date for the true-crime limited series drama The Staircase, starring Colin Firth & Toni Collette.

Based on a true story, ‘The Staircase’ further explores the life of Michael Peterson, his sprawling North Carolina family, and the suspicious death of his wife, Kathleen Peterson. Colin Firth (Kingsman: The Golden Circle, A Single Man) takes the role of Michael Peterson with Toni Collette (Knives Out, Muriel’s Wedding) as Kathleen Peterson.

Some of you out there may be aware of the case already, as it was the subject of a Netflix docuseries, also called ‘The Staircase’. That followed Michael Peterson, the crime novelist who was accused of killing his wife Kathleen after she is found dead at the bottom of a staircase in their home, and the 16-year judicial battle that followed.

Starring alongside Firth and Collette in the drama are Michael Stuhlbarg (Your Honor), Juliette Binoche (Chocolat), Dane DeHaan (ZeroZeroZero), Olivia DeJonge (Elvis), Rosemarie DeWitt (Little Fires Everywhere), Tim Guinee (Inventing Anna), Patrick Schwarzenegger (Moxie), Sophie Turner (Game of Thrones), Vincent Vermignon (Romy and Michele’s High School Reunion), Odessa Young (Shirley) and Parker Posey (Lost in Space).

The eight-episode limited series is written and executive produced by showrunners Antonio Campos (The Devil All The Time, Christine) and Maggie Cohn (Versace). Campos also directs six episodes, with Leigh Janiak directing two episodes. The series is co-produced by Annapurna Television.

The Staircase‘ premieres Thursday, 5th May 2022 at 8pm on Sky Atlantic & streaming service NOW.
