Millie Gibson Cast As ‘Doctor Who’ Companion to Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor

Millie Gibson will be joining Ncuti Gatwa to travel in time and space as the BBC announce the ‘Coronation Street’ star will be taking on the Companion role opposite the Fifteenth Doctor in Doctor Who.

Millie Gibson will play a character called “Ruby Sunday”, who will be the Doctor’s new companion. Starring alongside Ncuti Gatwa, Millie will make her debut over the festive season in 2023 when the Fifteenth Doctor takes control of the TARDIS.

Best known for her role as Coronation Street’s Kelly Neelan, 18-year-old Millie was the recipient of the Best Young Performer Award at The British Soap Awards earlier this year. Millie has also appeared in the dramas ‘Butterfly’ (ITV) and ‘Love, Lies and Records.’ (BBC).

“Whilst still being in total disbelief, I am beyond honoured to be cast as the Doctor’s companion,” commented Millie. “It is a gift of a role, and a dream come true, and I will do everything to try and fill the boots the fellow companions have travelled in before me. And what better way to do that than being by the fabulous Ncuti Gatwa’s side, I just can’t wait to get started.”

It may be a little while before we see Millie with Ncuti on screen as we first have the unexpected return of David Tennant to the role of The Doctor in three specials in November 2023 to coincide with the 60th anniversary. Tennant previously starred as the Tenth Doctor, however, he has officially been named as the Fourteenth Doctor, making him the first actor to play two variations of the character.

“Millie just is the companion. She is full of talent, strength, she has a cheeky sparkle in her eye and is sharp as a razor,” adds Ncuti Gatwa about his new sidekick. “From the moment she walked into the room she captured all of our attention with her effervescence and then solidified that attention with the sheer torque of her talent. This adventure is going to be so wild and so fun, I cannot WAIT to sail the universe with Millie!”

The other big changes to ‘Doctor Who’ for next year come on the production side. Russell T Davies has taken back the keys to the TARDIS, and has brought along with him the production company Bad Wolf, formed by former Who execs, Julie Gardner and Jane Tranter. In addition to that, the BBC and Disney Branded Television have joined forces to make Disney+ the new global home, outside of the UK and Ireland, for future seasons of ‘Doctor Who’. Whilst Disney has no creative control on the show, it does mean a huge financial injection into the production, allowing Davis, Bad Wolf and BBC Studios to make Who bigger and better than ever!

“It’s the great honour of my job to find the next generation of talent, and Millie shines like a star already,” said Russell T Davies, Showrunner. “She’s brilliant, dynamic, clever and a wonderful actor. As a Coronation Street fan, I’ve seen Millie survive chases, guns and sieges, but that’s nothing compared to what lies ahead for Ruby Sunday.”

‘Doctor Who‘ returns to screens in November 2023 with Tennant starring in three specials to coincide with the 60th-anniversary which will premiere exclusively on the BBC for the UK and Ireland. Ncuti Gatwa then takes over in Christmas 2023 as the Fifteenth Doctor. Disney+ will air the series internationally. If you want to keep track of this or any other show, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
