‘Luther: The Fallen Sun’ Gets Trailer, Premiering March On Netflix

by Dave Elliott

Netflix has released the trailer for the highly-anticipated movie Luther: The Fallen Sun, which sees Idris Elba return to the role of the gruff detective later this month in cinemas, and then on Netflix in March.

In ‘Luther: The Fallen Sun’ – an epic continuation of the award-winning television saga, reimagined for film – a gruesome serial killer is terrorizing London while brilliant but disgraced detective John Luther (Idris Elba) sits behind bars. Haunted by his failure to capture the cyber psychopath who now taunts him, Luther decides to break out of prison to finish the job by any means necessary.

The movie will see the Golden Globe Nominated Idris Elba back in the titular role, and joined by Grammy, Tony, Emmy Winner and two-time Academy Award Nominee Cynthia Erivo (‘Harriet’, ‘Genius’), along with Emmy Award Nominee Andy Serkis (‘The Lord of the Rings trilogy’, ‘War for the Planet of the Apes’). The film also sees Dermot Crowley reprising his role in the tv series as Martin Schenk.

The tv drama, which premiered in 2010, completed five seasons on the BBC. Elba has won two Golden Globes and a Royal Television Society best actor award for his performance in the titular role. We last saw Luther back in 2019 on a case that followed a series of monstrous killings that becomes ever more audacious. Luther and new recruit D.S. Catherine Halliday were confounded by a tangle of leads and misdirection that seems designed to protect an unspeakable horror.

The new film is produced in association with the BBC, with exec producers Dan Finlay (for Chernin Entertainment) Priscilla Parish (for BBC Studios) and Kris Thykier. Peter Chernin, Jenno Topping and David Ready, Neil Cross, and Idris Elba serve as producers.

Luther: The Fallen Sun‘ will get a limited cinematic release from Friday, 24th February 2023 and will then premiere on Netflix worldwide from Friday, 10th March 2023.
