US network CBS has handed out another batch of early renewals, bringing their total up to 19 renewed shows this season. This group brings ‘NCIS‘ to Season 21, whilst both ‘NCIS: Hawai’i‘ and ‘CSI: Vegas‘ get 3rd Seasons.
The three shows are joined by ’60 Minutes’, ‘Survivor’, ‘The Amazing Race’, ‘Tough As Nails’, ‘Lingo’ and true crime docuseries ’48 Hours’ which also land new seasons in this batch (although don’t most don’t air in the UK.)
CBS previously renewed their #1 new drama ‘Fire Country‘, their #1 comedy ‘Young Sheldon‘, the US version of ‘Ghosts‘, comedies ‘The Neighborhood‘, and ‘Bob Hearts Abishola‘, alongside ‘So Help Me Todd‘, ‘The Equalizer‘, ‘FBI‘, ‘FBI: International‘ and ‘FBI: Most Wanted‘.
In addition to all those, CBS has also given an early series order to ‘The Never Game‘, a new drama starring and executive produced by Justin Hartley (‘Smallville’, ‘This Is Us’). Based on the bestselling novel by Jeffery Deaver, ‘The Never Game‘ features Hartley as lone-wolf survivalist Colter Shaw, who roams the country as a “reward seeker,” using his expert tracking skills to help private citizens and law enforcement solve all manner of mysteries while contending with his own fractured family.
“This season CBS is continuing its winning tradition, delivering an unparalleled combination of top returning series and new hit shows that are entertaining huge audiences on both broadcast and streaming,” said Amy Reisenbach, president of CBS Entertainment. “It is a testament to the stellar work being done by our best-in-class talent in front of and behind the camera that we have had yet another exceptional season, and I know we will only continue to build on this foundation of outstanding programming as we look ahead toward next fall.”
With 19 renewals in the bag, that does beg the question “what is still missing?”… Three notably absent are ‘Blue Bloods‘, ’S.W.A.T.’ and ‘East New York’ (the latter of which does not yet have a UK broadcaster at the moment.)
Don’t panic (yet) if you are fans of ‘Blue Bloods’, which is in its 13th Season, and ‘SWAT’, which is currently in Season 6. Both are in active negotiations for renewals. The issue is that, the longer the show goes on, the more expensive it becomes due to the long-standing cast salaries going up. However, inevitably, ratings also decline, particularly the linear ratings which are used for traditional advertising. That means CBS is looking to cut the budgets of the series, which means negotiations take longer to work out. At the moment, things are looking likely for ‘Blue Bloods’ getting a 14th Season, and ‘SWAT’ landing Season 7, it’s just taking time to sort out. Both shows sell well internationally, which also goes in their favour.
Things are a little more precarious for ‘East New York’, as it is a new drama, and is very much “on the bubble”. It may get picked up again, but CBS will be looking to see how other shows perform on the network, such as the upcoming mid-season drama ‘True Lies‘, before they make a decision.
‘NCIS‘ and ‘NCIS: Hawai’i‘ both air on Disney+ in the UK, whilst ‘CSI: Vegas‘ airs on Alibi. If you want to keep track of any of the shows mentioned in this article, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
