‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Renewed For Season 20

Grey’s Anatomy will continue to be the longest-running primetime medical drama on US television, as ABC renews the drama for a 20th Season.

The series follows the staff of Grey Sloan as they encounter more hurdles in their professional and personal lives. The record-breaking Shondaland franchise explores the ever-expanding world of modern medicine through the eyes of beloved returning and new characters.

Whilst long-running star Ellen Pompeo (mostly) bowed out this season, and there are no further deals in place for her to appear on-screen after Season 19, she does remain an exec producer on the drama, and provides voiceover at the open and close of the episodes. Given Pompeo’s connection to the series, the crew are hopeful to get the actress to pop back up for guest spots moving forward.

Alongside Pompeo, the nineteenth season also saw Kelly McCreary leave her role as Maggie Pierce after nine seasons on the medical drama. Season twenty could potentially see some more cast changes too, as Kevin McKidd (Owen), Kim Raver (Teddy), Camilla Luddington (Jo) and Caterina Scorsone (Amelia) are all at the end of their contracts. Whilst there is absolutely no indication at the moment of any of these actors leaving the series, ABC Signature, who produce the drama, will need to negotiate new deals with them before they return.

To help plug some of the holes in the cast, season nineteen introduced a bunch of new faces, including Harry Shum Jr. (Benson Kwan), Adelaide Kane (Jules Millin), Alexis Floyd (Simone Griffith), Niko Terho (Lucas Adams), and Midori Francis (Mika Yasuda). Most, if not all of these characters are expected to return for the new season.

There is a major change behind the scenes next season as well, with Krista Vernoff, who has been showrunner since 2017, and also showrunner on ‘Station 19’ since 2019, deciding to step back from both shows. Exec Producer Meg Marinis, who has been on ‘Greys’ since the beginning (having worked her way up from being a researcher on season one), will take over the showrunning gig.

On the subject of the sister show ‘Station 19’, there hasn’t been a renewal for that yet as deals are still being worked out, but it is expected to come in due course. The series will also get a new showrunner, or possibly co-showrunners, to replace the departing Vernoff.

‘Grey’s Anatomy’ was created and is executive produced by Shonda Rhimes (‘Scandal’, ‘How to Get Away with Murder’, ‘Station 19’). Betsy Beers (‘Scandal’, ‘How to Get Away with Murder’, ‘Station 19’), Mark Gordon (‘Saving Private Ryan’), Debbie Allen, Zoanne Clack and Meg Marinis are executive producers. The drama is produced by ABC Signature, which is a part of Disney Television Studios.

Grey’s Anatomy‘ Season 19 is currently airing on Disney+ in the UK and on ABC in the USA. If you want to keep track of this or any other show, you can add it via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
