‘Doctor Who’ Adds Actress & RuPaul’s Drag Race Winner Jinkx Monsoon In Major Role

Award-winning actress, singer and two-time ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ winner, Jinkx Monsoon has been for “a major role” in the new series of Doctor Who the BBC has announced.

“There’s a storm coming in, Doctor. A monsoon! Yes, Jinkx Monsoon, Broadway sell-out sensation, RuPaul’s Drag Race’s All-Star of All-Stars, joins Doctor Who in a major role, and it’s going to be spectacular!” said showrunner Russell T Davies on social media. “So excited. So honoured. This has been 6 months in the planning (more details in next month’s DWM) and it’s going to be wild!”

Jinkx has cultivated an international fanbase after winning two seasons of ‘RuPaul’s Drag Race’ including an “All Stars” season where she was crowned “Queen of Queens”, competing against other winners of the show.

However, Jinkx is not only a brilliant drag act but also an award-winning actress. She joins ‘Doctor Who’ after completing her sell-out run on Broadway, where she made her highly-anticipated debut as Matron “Mama” Morton in Broadway’s longest-running show, Chicago. Her run on Broadway was a historic moment for the LGBTQIA+ community, as she became the first drag queen to play the role of Mama Morton, breaking box office records in her extended 8-week run.

“I’m honoured, thrilled, and utterly excited to join Doctor Who! Russell T Davies is a visionary and a brilliant writer – I can’t wait to get into the weeds with him and the crew!” adds Jinkx. “I hope there’s room in the TARDIS for my luggage.”

Jinkx is set to join Ncuti Gatwa’s Fifteenth Doctor when his season airs in 2024, alongside new companion “Ruby Sunday”, played by Millie Gibson (‘Coronation Street’). Guest roles announce for the new season include Jemma Redgrave, who returns as Kate Lethbridge-Stewart, and Aneurin Barnard (‘The White Queen’, ‘Cilla’, ‘Peaky Blinders’) as the mysterious Roger ap Gwilliam, alongside Anita Dobson (‘Eastenders’) and Michelle Greenidge (‘After Life’, ‘It’s A Sin’) who appear in undisclosed roles.

However, before we get to all of this, we have David Tennant starring as the Fourteenth Doctor in three specials to coincide with the 60th anniversary of the series in November 2023. Ncuti Gatwa will fully take over the role in the Christmas 2023 episode.

Doctor Who‘ returns to screens in November 2023 with Tennant starring in three specials to coincide with the 60th-anniversary which will premiere exclusively on the BBC for the UK and Ireland. Disney+ will air the series internationally.  Ncuti Gatwa then takes over in Christmas 2023 as the Fifteenth Doctor.

If you want to keep track of this or any other show, you can add them via our Never Miss system, and you’ll be notified when it gets a UK premiere date.
