‘Harry Potter’ TV Series Remake In Development For HBO Max
HBO Max is apparently in talks to develop a ‘Harry Potter’ tv series. Given the popularity of The Wizarding World, that shouldn’t be a huge surprise, however, what is slightly more eyebrow-raising is that it would be another adaptation of the books rather than a new, original work.
As I’m sure most people on the planet are aware at this point, JK Rowling’s series of novels follow the exploits of teen wizard Harry Potter, along with his friends, Hermione Granger and Ron Weasley, as they progress through their years as students at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. The books have already been made into a massively successful film franchise starring Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint, which does rather beg the question as to the point of a tv series…
However, fans of the novels would likely point out the massive amount of content in the books which was left out of the films due to the limited time prescribed by a movie. The idea here would be to create at least one season per book, giving the tv series much more time to include that missing content from the source material.
Warner Bros Discovery, who produced the films as Warner Bros. Pictures, have been looking for ways to exploit the ‘Harry Potter’ IP as one of the major brands. They have approached JK Rowling, who has creative control over any versions of her work, about the series, with a view to her coming on board as a producer. If she agrees, they would then look to find a writer for the series.
Outside of the main novels, the ‘Harry Potter’ franchise has already seen a number of expansions including the stage play, ‘Harry Potter And The Cursed Child’, the ‘Fantastic Beasts’ movies, various theme parks, and most recently, the hugely successful ‘Hogwarts Legacy’ video game. Whether re-mining the original books rather than going with something new, or expanding one of the other properties, is a good idea, only time will tell.
The ‘Harry Potter’ tv series is still only “in development” at the moment, so may not come to pass, but we’ll let you know when we hear more.
